Here? I think still 11pm. Give us time to chill and take it easy. We don't want to be speeding on the expressways at night in my car. So it'll be chill.

Post Whores - hyjacking my thread :nono:

So here is the intake finally finished and painted. Im to lazy to polish out everything to a shine so I just painted everything. I used a chrome/silver paint. The intake manifold was sanded down smooth on the parts you can see. This is probably just a temporary setup, I see how long it last and when it starts to look really bad I will just get the whole thing powdercoated more than likely. The finger prints are just smudges that wipe off.

what brand paint is that? I used Krylon chrome and its doo doo. But I used this stuff from DG, its Miracal brand, a dollar a can and its aluminum color, it blings pretty well.

Yea I can get some more but I wont be able to get them up till Sunday. I got school right now and then meet up with Dave right after that. Do you want them of the porting at the TB?

Oil pump just came in. It feels like christmas here, I get a new package everyday

Although it looks great already for a rattle can, a little wet sanding might make it pop a bit? :dunno:

Nice job none the less. I did the same on my air cleaner assembly in my AMC, mostly 'cause the then 30 some odd year old paint looked dog poo on stick, and dirt would just cling to it.

SilvrEclipse

Have you ever tried wetsanding spray paint. I tried it once on some grey paint and it f*ed it all up. I dont think it would work, but may be worth a try. I might just paint some random metal and test out the wet sanding. I dont want to mess with the manifold unless I know it will work.

Here is a pic of the ARP heatstuds and the new oil pump. Timing belt should be in this week too. This weekend Im planning on tearing the oil pump and crank off the used block. Maybe I can get it sandblasted this weekend also. I will have to check on that. Then maybe in the next two weeks I can get the block and crank to the machine shop. I only need a few more parts, most of them will be ordered in the next week or so. These are the parts I still need.

-Hydrolic tentioner
-Timing belt pulleys
-Waterpump
-Rod/Main bearings

The start up date is July first but things are looking good from this point so the motor should be finished a few weeks early.

Megasquirt will hopefully be ordered in the next 2-3 weeks. I will have to assemble the kit so this will take time and then I will just have to wire it in to the car.

Here are some more pics.

Have you ever tried wetsanding spray paint. .

Yes. I must say that the overall outcome depends on the quality of paint used. AND, it is a learn by practice process. But I've bought "junk" fenders of different color from the car I'm working and much success with it, and nobody knew it was from a can. I'll check and see if I have any pics on this drive or not.

Nah, Im just going to sandblast the outside of the block. The inside will be covered up.

This weekend went pretty good. Got most everything done that I needed to. Saturday I went to my buddies house to work on the motor some more. Got everything off the block and the crank out. Didn't get the block cleaned up any, I am just going to let the shop bead blast it to clean it up some. My dad will be taking everything to the shop this week and then it will be ready for assembly. Timing belt also came in on Friday. I need to find out how much the machine shop is going to charge me before I order the rest of the parts. Here are some pics from this weekend. It rained pretty much all weekend, today turned out to be nice but we had to tear this thing apart in the rain.

The block was taken to the machine shop on Friday to get bead blaster, bored 0.020, cleaned. The crank will also get machined. The guy said he wont be able to work on it till the end of next week so it maybe 2 weeks before its done. Its fine though cause Im so busy with school for the next 3 weeks I wont have a chance to even go see the block. My dad is picking it up for me.

Im selling emanage probably next week to help pay for the machine work and the rest of the parts. I should be started assembling by the 2nd week in May. Motor will hopefully be done a month ahead of schedule. First part of June it should be in the car and running. For more bad news the clutch has now gotten screwed up to. Oil has leaked past the rear main seal and leaked oil all over my fairly new stg 2 clutch. Thats not big deal though, I will just have the kevlar facing changed on it when we pull the motor.

Im going to sell the block and head and spend that money on Megasquirt, I will need a 1:1 FPR and 750/850 injectors. I will still be running the 14b for a while, but in a few months I hope to get a E316g.

Thats pretty much the plan for this summer, we will see how everything goes...

Ok so its time for an update. My dad picked up my block from the machine shop this morning. They have been busy lately so it took them about 2 weeks to get it done. Not a big deal though since I had no use for it anyways. The block was bored .020, the crank was reground .010, and the block was bead blasted. Everything totalled up to around $170 which isin't to bad IMO. I had them order me a set of main and rod bearing also which will be here beginning of next week.

My last exam is monday and I plan on going home wednesday to start assembling the motor. As some of you may know I have been looking for an internship this summer and finally found one with the army corps of engineers. I still have to finish filling out the paper work and all that shit. So depending on when I have to start will determine how much time I have to put the motor together and get it in the car.

Pics will be up next week.

Ok guys I got a nice update. Exams are finally done and I made it back home. Things are finally starting to come together. Today I got the block painted and the bearings are coming in tomorrow. And saturday Im taking everything to my friends house on saturday and we are going to gap the rings. I start my new job on Monday back in Columbia so the block is going with me and Im going to plastigage all the bearing and put together what I can.

Next weekend THE MOTOR IS COMING OUT! Next friday I will start pulling the motor out and hopefully by Saturday it will be completely out. Im using a lot of the bolts and some parts of the head on the new motor so that whole next week I will be swaping parts and getting the more ready to drop in. Then the next weekend the motor will be going back in and will be fired up hopefully on Saturday the 24th.

Here are some pics of the progress today. There should be more uploaded every couple days as I do more work on it.

Just a little update. Yesterday I got the rings gapped.
Top ring - .022
Middle ring - .020
Oil ring - .022

the bearings finally came in and were picked up on Saturday. I also borrowed a ring compression from someone so this week I will plastigage all the bearings and assemble the bottom end. The only parts I still need are: waterpump, hydrolic tensioner, and idler and tensioner pulleys for the timing belt. All of these parts can be got from advance so thats no big deal. Im going to pick those up sometime this week also. Everything is still going smooth so far and on schedule for the drop in date.

What??

The flat piece of metal that got painted also?? Yea its the bottom of the block. The 420a block splits at the bottom and the crank goes in between them. You should be able to see the main bearing journals it.

Uhhh, I'm talking about the only other piece of metal on the mat there Jason, process of elimination should help you out a ton. ;)

I have to admit I think thats kinda gay, but also kinda sweet. I would imagine that would give superior support to the crank, but I also see it as one more spot that could leak, etc.

It's the crank cradle/bridge. You're supposed to seal it up when you assemble it so it doesn't leak. I didn't have any problems with that part leaking on any of my motors so just seal it and you should be fine.

On the 420A it's nearly impossible for the main cap to leak. It is so flat and it has a cross thatching type pattern to lock the metal under pressure and the torquing of the bolts.

There also isin't any pressure on that seal. It only get slashed with oil.

Ok guys I got a lot of work done on the motor last night. I started off by measuring the bearing clearences on the main journels with plastigage. They were all in spec so thats good. I would have gone ahead and put the crank in for good but I didn't have any sealant for the bedplate so I will just finish that tomorrow maybe. I installed the pistons and rods already so when I put the crank in I can measure the rod bearings and then I will be done for the most part.

The last pic is just a random one of my new cat.

The blown motor will be pulled tomorrow and the new one is going in next weekend. New pics will be up on Sunday and we will finally know how much damage has been done.

O yea and the car still runs fine. After 2.5 months of driving on a blown motor the 420a is still alive.

Ok some more pics of the motor. I got the cams in last night, ran in to some problems when 2 bolts snapped off inside the head. Finally got those out and replaced them with some from the other motor. So the head is done and only needs the valve cover bolted on. The intake manifold will be put on tonight. I got my jeep TB built and it seems to be working perfect. Going to try and install all the sensors, wiring harness, alternator, and the water pipes tonight. I only have tonight and tmrw to finish this motor and then Friday I pack up right after work and go to put it in. I may have to pull a late night tmrw to finish everything but it will get done.

The car should be running Saturday evening sometime. Sunday it will get driven around and broken in some. This is the plan so far. Hopefully everything will work out that way. I will keep everyone up to date...

Intake manifold in installed and TB. Cam,crank, knock, map sensors are installed. Oil feed for the turbo is on. Alternator is on. Tomorrow is the last night I have to work on it and still have to repaint the heater hose tubes and install, clean the thermostat housings and install them, and just a few other things. It should be almost ready to install on Saturday. I got a new disc for my clutch, new TOB also.

The only thing I am worried about is this motor spinning a bearing. I platigaged all the bearings and they were in spec but I hear about so many new motors spinning rod bearings.

I still have to pull the belt pulley off the old motor and install on the new one along with setting the timing and I will be finished. Friday night I got the motor ready to drop in, set the timing, installed the clutch and all that good stuff. Saturday about 1 we started to put it in the car, didn't take as long as expected and by about 8 that night the motor got to run. It started right up and was a little ruff but we lowered the fuel pressure for the bigger injectors and it smoothed out. Let the car run for about 30 min and shut it off to let it cool back down.

Sunday I pulled the spring from the wastegate so the turbo wouldn't boost and did some WOT pulls in 3rd to seat the rings. Changed the oil after that and it appeared to have some metal flake in it along with something else. I cant tell if it was coolant or gas. I was thinking that maybe when I primed the motor some gas leaked down the cylinders since I didn't unplug the injectors and it may have even leaked some when it was running. I am just going to run it for a couple hundred miles and see if it stops. I will just have to keep and eye on it to make sure it stays lubricating.

The car likes to idle surge bad sometimes and it idles about 950rpms which is higher than it use to. I think I am going to adjust the IAC sensor some today and see if thats the problem.

The turbo also seems to be completely f*ed. Just letting the car idle with no air filter had oil dripping from the inlet of the compressor housing. So that needs to be fixed soon.

So there are a few problems but nothing that cant be fixed relatively easy. worst comes to worse and I have to change the head gasket which isin't that big of a deal. Car has about 50miles on it right now and is still running strong.

Ok guys, I have been meaning to update this thread for a while now. Just started summer school last week and have 0 free time.

The new motor has 500 miles on it and still seems to be running fine. There are a few problems that need to be worked out and hopefully everything will be done soon.

The car has a bad idle surge when rolling. Changed the IAC and it helped for a week but it started back tonight. Its that damn jeep TB on it. I think the headgasket didn't seat and is still leaking. I saw tonight where it looks like some coolant has seept out the radiator cap. The oil pressure has always been low. Sometimes idling at 10psi. Im going to try and shim the spring to bump it up some.
The turbo does not seem to be leaking out the seals anymore. Which is a good thing. Need to change the oil and reinstall oil cooler. Also need to bleed the clutch tmrw.

I ordered megasquirt so it should be here this week. Hopefully it will be installed in the next 2 weeks. The car doesn't run very well right now so maybe this will help.

I tried to put pics up but photobucket blurrys them up for some reason and they look like shit.

SilvrEclipse
06-10-2008, 11:16 AM
I would like to just burn the whole damn car to the ground. There is just always something and it seems like even more since that motor went in. I was hoping it would solve most of the problems but it has created more. I wish I had a stock TB to just try and see if the idle was better. I replaced the IAC and it fixed the surge but the car wouldn't idle when cold. Now the car idles fine cold but the surge is back. I dont know what the hell to do with it anymore.

The clutch needs to be bleed also, the car drives like shit because of it and I just dont have any time to do it. Im hoping once Megasquirt gets on the car it will smooth everything out.

Yea and I dont know about the pics.

Hell, I wish i had a car to have problems with. I really miss not having the eclipse :banghead: I want to see some video. But anyway, megasquirt will at least give you a platform from where you can better adjust everythigna dn fix those problems.

MS will only cause more problems if somethings not right in the setup. Remember, work out all the problems and kinks with the fewer amount of things in the mix. When you add MS, it's just something else that can be causing problems then. Tweak to good now.

I have a stocker if you want. If you pay for shipping you can have it for free. I have no use for it. Just sitting in my parents basement.
