I finally found my clunk on the 05 convertible. It is the passenger side control arm bushing (rear). Is it difficult to replace? Are there any tricks or special tools needed?
Thanks in advance,
Don

We are buying a 2001 PT that also has a clunk at the passenger front end. I'm assumming that it is a control arm bushing as well. Has anyone done this repair? I have done it on other vehicles and it was real asy.

I havent seen any control arm bushing failures but I have seen the bell crank on the rear suspension fail and many upper strut bushings and bearings fail. The repalce ment of the control arm bushings will require a press.

for front end clunks, check the sway bar mounts. i had a terrible clunk on my 03 and ordered all new bushings when i got it apart the only thing wrong was the sway bar mounts and you can get urethane ones for about 10.00

Yes, the contol arm bushings are a problem. Also the sway bar bushings. If you don,t have power tools, let the dealer do it. I just sold mine after five years and replaced the contol arm bushings 3 times. Also a horrible clunck can come from the sway bar bushings but cheaper to replace. It will happen again.Good luck.

I have notced over the years that when you jack up your front tire as a example, there is stress on those bushings. Wish I could tell you why.

Did the sound come and go or happen all the time. I have a grinding sound that comes and goes but when it happens it is from a stopped position. The sound is for a second but noticable.

My clunking sound was the motor mount. Easy to repair.

Sounds like a front wheel beariig friend. Had one pressed in my sons car and it still made a knocking sound when changing lanes at high speeds. I finally just went to a auto wrecker and put a used one on and all was well.Good luck. Wayne
