2000 Impala PS - High Idle

Hello everyone, i am not a novice at all and have done some reading throughout this section about the problem that i have been experiencing.

I have a 2000 Impala PS (Police Special) with 144000 miles and it and the car is still like new (even with 3 kids).

It seem that my IAC has gone south on me. The thing that puzzles me about this is that there is no check engine light or any trouble codes at all. believe me i have checked and paid close attention.

This care is a dandy and has been very, very reliable transportation.

It started here a while back and would just pick up speed on it's own and would be idling real high at a stop sign, stop light or when i put there care in park. To remedy this i would, just simply turn the engine of and wait a few seconds and then start it back up and the high idle would disappear. But, just this morning the little trick simply will not work.

What i am asking is if there is some sort of bypass that i can do to be able to drive the vehicle without a high idle until i get paid and able to afford the part? I am a Disabled American vet and only get paid once a month and that is only on the 1st of each month. This being the 21st, i simply do not have the funds to be able to buy the part needed.

So any and all advice is greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Thanks in advance...

David

idle air bypass can be cleaned i clean mine every 50,000mi . also if idle randomly runs high or always high this is usually a vacuum leak check all vac lines use vac guage and possible brake booster. iac is usually bad if when you increase idle rpm the idle does not drop quickly.rev to 1500 rpm then take foot off gas pedal if it stays high and does not drop to 700rpm quickly less than 2sec. your iac and /or throttle body needs clean /replacement....

I wound up being a stuff open EGR Valve. After looking around and testing a few things. It finally threw me a PO1404 code.

I pulled off the EGR Valve and even went as far as removing the little neck that connects to the intake. low and behold there was a good bit of carbon build up. After cleaning everything off that i could get to and spending $15.99 for all the replacement gaskets, the care is now running like it always has.

Thanks for your help in this matter. It surely is greatly appreciated.

By the way... if i was to replace the EGR valve itself. It would've costed me $87.99. i am glad that i have checked with you guys first and did some research.

Thanks again...

remember that the egr don't last forever if this repeats or if after 5,000mi you find carbon excessive replace egr as they tend to loose proper open close as they get old over 80-100,000mi......

I am witnessing this now. The clean out is working for the time being. I am hoping that will will work until i get my VA check on the 1st of February. The car has 144,000 miles on it and this is first thing that i have ever had a problem with. I will make extra sure to include the EGR in my monthly budget.

Thanks again for help time and help on this matter...
