For the last 4yrs I have been trying to fix my Rear controls on my Van. Well Guess what. There was nothing ever wrong with them.
On a 2001 model there is a series of white dots the first I thought was rear control setting. Its really low setting but I also notice the other white dots where further to the left and closer together. So I thought it was LOW MID HIGH.
So for the rear controls to work all you have to to is set to rear-ctl. But the key to this is it needed to be between rear and ctl. If you don't have it there the rear controls don't work period.. LOL So the first white dot is just a lower setting not for rear control. How dumb am I.. All that work for nothing.:banghead: :disappoin :grinyes:

Actually man what you describe sounds misleading. I could see someone making that mistake thinking the furthest to the left would allow the control to work.

Thanks for being candid. I feel your pain! I have slaved away for hours based on a false assumption. Keeps me humble - and occupied and out of trouble. Thanks for the info :)

If I had my user guide with the van I may have not have made this error. Also i did not start driving the van full time until a year ago. But still its my fault for not seeing this problem. I always wonder why It would go to full blast under that setting when I thought it was low speed. Kinda thought it was a vent setting or some thing. Now seeing the Freestar has a rear control button may have been do to the fact of others trying to figure this feature out on the Windstar. Also when you sit in the drivers seat. You don't really notice the Rear-CTL part. I do notice the rear part but the knob blocks CTL from my view. I just happen to reach down to pick up some coins off the floor and saw CTL. And said hmmm. And sure enough I reached back to the rear controls and BOO_YAA It worked. Had pulled before off the rear panel to AC Heat box and checked for loose vac line also pulled out rear control and started to dealer to replace the part but said it works from the front why bother.. Im just glad I did not pay the 50.00 buck for the new one..

The first experience I had with a Windstar was a rental... maybe '95 or '96. We used it to summer vacation with some friends. We never got the rear folks comfortable ... we froze them in back, while I was burning up in the driving chair. That was a strain on the friendship.

By '99 the marking was a bit clearer ... but not by much, took me a while to see that "rear control" position on the switch. Still, the rear auto-directional ("mode") control function stinks ... and I finally disconnected it. Life is much better now.
