Installing lights that don't have any sort of mounting tab.

Does plain old white glue cloud the back of headlights? I think I'll try that on my Silverado...

Losing parts. I think Silver S2000, er I mean JAY, can concur with his windshield dilemna. I lose on average two parts per model, but it's probably my own fault since I vacuum the floor too much. I lost one of the pedestals for the rear spoiler on my Castrol Supra... therefore my Supra went wingless. Oh well, looks like some beefed up nonturbo Supra streetcar now (oh yeah, I hate painting taillights too, which is why the Supra has clear taillamps, which adds to the streetcar appeal. I should have left the Castrol decals off (which were a pain in the ass as well, especially when they ran over the fins of the hood and fender vents) and made a custom muffler canister for it and dubbed it street legal.

I actually liked doing that. Reminds me of a Ford F-100 customized pick up I did. I made it look like it is all one solid piece with no seams.

Actually remembered something. There is one more thing that I hated doing. DECALS!!

This has been my weakest if not dreadest(is this even a word:rolleyes:), part of model building. Sometimes it would take grueling minutes to make sure it would sit right on the kit. I mean after it is on, all I do is slap on a coat of clearcoat and make the decal look painted on the body. But the whole dipping it in water and then placing it on the body, uugghh!

What are some of the things that you guys use or do when it comes down to the dreadful application of decals?

My tools for decals are simple, water, cotton tips, forcepts wet fingers and decal softener. They can give me hours of enjoying! :p

Yes finding reference pic is one major part in my model time. I have 2XX Megs of car photos in my HD and sometimes I can use 3~7 days in findig pics.

I love doing decals now! As long as I have my bottle of decal set :D
One thing I hate is painting somewhat large surfaces with a brush because it leaves brush strokes. But at the same time I don't want to buy the spray can because it doesn't seem worth it

I had to bring up this thread to vent my frustration over decals, and the recent fuckup of the decals on my Monte Carlo (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t11545.html). I love every single part about modelling except for the damn decals and the clean-up  .

Getting a kit 99% done, then making a fucking mess because of the goddamn decals is something that makes me want to smash a kit.

Edit: So, does anyone have any good tips for getting decals on streight? They either

1. Get on streight and then dont want to stick worth shit, or

2.They go on crooked and as soon as i try to streighten them, they are solidly on there.

Also, any good ways of getting them off (for when I fuck them up, and decide not to use them) without ruining the paint?

I'm no expert but in the couple race preped cars I've done there is a LOT of decaling. I use a paper towel and dampen it a bit, ball up one end, put it in some tepid water and squeez out the water. When the decal is loose from the backing I slide it onto the model and dab it with the damn paper towel ti get rid of a bunch of water. It should still be able to slide around. Then with some eyebrow tweezers I move the decal into the right position then try and get as much water out from underneath the decal with the damp paper towel. If it's stuck and needs to be repositioned I dab a bit of water on the decal with my finger and it will usually loosen up. Umm that's about it I think.

BTW what's the decal softener stuff for? Will it make big decals sit down better over detail like rivets and stuff?

I hate big complex decals that need to be folded and put on bumper corners and bent into complex shapes. More to come about this in my Corolla thread soon. http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/contrib/ruinkai/screama.gif

I hear ya. In this case it happened to be that there are pinstriping that goes around the whole body, and its soo damn thin that it just broke, Its so unbelievably thin where it goes around the wheel wells. No biggie, but then when I did get it on, I noticed right away that it was crooked, and I couldnt move it :(

I consider myself to be quite good at the brush, (I used to spend hours detailing military aircraft models before I got into cars), and I find it to be alot of fun, so I figure ill do the striping by hand.

Ive rarely had to do much with the folding of decals before, so Ill have to check up on your thread later.

The loving part more than outweighs the hating part :D

When I find out that I ran out of paint and its late in the night and the shops are close and I am so close to finishing it off...hehe

That and parts that dont fit too.
Sometimes instruction manuals that dont seem clear enough.

Finally getting motivated to do some painting, and suddenly losing all motivation while the paint's drying .

1. my impatience which leads too
- cocked up paint jobs
- cocked up decals
- lost parts (I've overcome this by putting EVERY piece of the model into a snap lock bag and only pulling out what im working on... having a warsteiner clk dtm with no tail light and a missing side mirror is annoying... )

2. finding all the tips on this forum 4 months too late.

masking the windshield whithout precut masking tape, i HATE that

nornicle
05-02-2003, 07:46 AM
masking without pre cut is not too difficult with some 6mm tamiya and some patience imho.

*oh edit : my tip for masking without a precut is to do it one side at a time... e.g with a windshiled you do the top section and the bottom section and paint with near dry paint the first coat (to create a seal between paint and masking tape) once you have thoroughly painted the two sides, and let dry, you can move on the other two sides... With side windows with some trick patterns, use a very sharp knife to score the "pattern" after putting the tape onto the plastic, pull off the masking tape and voila ;).

ooh yeh.. 1) porsche carrrera last coat of blue before finishing it, the rig becomes loose and my carrera falls nose down into the floor.. I was so annoyed Ijust sat it back up sprayed stacks of blue on.. yo can't really tell now.. except for the lack of details.. *cough*

what I find maddening is my enzo... First time I sprayed I tried to polish too early, and forgot to sand the primer... so when I did polish the first parts polished were the primer bits so lots of white spots.. sanded it down... resprayed.. find out that the bits i sanded are now a different tone to the other parts... couldnt be bothered so started sanding bits of dust out for the final coat.. used an old micro mesh sheet of 3200.. with blue from the carrera.. figure it wont do too much damage.. today I look at my enzo and I all I want to do is throw it out.. even im on the last home run... hahahhaha.. im going a bit mad..

In fact to stop being mad while building the enzo I bought the 911 carrera so I could have an "easy" "results easily achievable" model....

The enzo = time spent doesnt = results.. definitely not a beginners model.. hah..

I hate painting the tiny bits. You know what I mean; distributors, brake boosters, wiper motors, steering columns, fans..... I love making huge razor saw mods and laying down stellar paint schemes, and transplanting slick engines and new suspensions. I'll do that any day of the week. But put a tree of tiny bits in front of me and say "these need to be flat black" and I'll come close to snapping your neck.

Also hate it when my brush decides it has a mind of its own. Oh, and also when them little pieces fly off the tweezers or whatever I'm holding them with. Oh oh, and also when these said little pieces don't position up properly on the car thereby leaving glue all over the place.

Don't think there is any part I really hate. Probably the bit I like least is all the preparation work removing ejector pin marks, mold lines and sinkages. That seems to take the longest time before you can actually start painting. Speaking of painting I don't like all the vapors from spraying, I wear a respirator and try and get good ventilation, but the smell always gets into the house. Not that the family complain but it can't be a good thing!

Actully what I hate most is being at work on a weekend when I could be at home doing a bit of modelling :(

Revells new decal sheets, which have a cludy glue on them. They say it dries clear, yeah right! When you spray your model and the paint didn't reach one little area, then when you spray it again it becomes rough & it looses gloss. Or one little bit of dust that gets on a open flat area on the body, which stands out the most.

Ok serious. I like placing decals and the most challenging on was on the rear and front bumpers of the Corolla below. And i did them with just water.
