one dead cylinder

i have a 1999 sl2 with 265k. I took a compression reading on the pistons and it showed one dead cylinder. any suggestions?

Squirt a little bit of oil down the spark plug hole and see if you get anything. If you do, bad rings. If you don't, stuck valve. Either way, it's gonna get pricey.

from passenger side to drivers side the numbers were 175, 0, 175, 175.
from passenger side to drivers side the numbers were 175, 0, 175, 175.

zero. ouch. id say a valve went. if it was a headgasket id think the other numbers would be low on either side. does it start? smoke come out the exhaust?

It starts and it smokes. It has smoked for about 100,000 miles. It idles a little rough. i believe it is a value as well.

yeaa id say a valve has gone. how have you been driving it like that tho?
you can get a new head or redo the valves on the head you have. ive seen people get it done for 250 at a local shop.
you could also get a new engine but it needs to be from '99 or later and a DOHC, so no mods are needed. it would be just plug and play

It turned out to be a valve that went. The mechanic i took it to wants to replace to motor instead of doing a valve job and replacing the timing chain.

I replaced the motor as well when i blew the valves in my '97. its quite a bit easier (time wise) and somewhat cheaper then doing the timing chain and valves. if you do replace the engine you need one from '99 -'02. you can use ealier years, however you will need new manifolds, fuel rail, and some other modifications. Good luck
