Overheating

Any thought's on why my 2005 Impala 3.4 V6 might be overheating. I've filled the water and coolant, (It was dex so I'm worried it might have clogged something). It gets hot when I stop (the heater seems to blow cold at the same time) and then when I drive it cools to normal temp. both fans seem to be working fine. No leaking water that I can see. so my next step is to change the thermostat. Any thoughts?? thanks

Welcome to AF. You say you have filled the coolant, was it low any leaks?

Not that I can see, the coolant was a little low but not much, the water wasn't low at all

I just tried to replace the thermostat got to the part where I had to take apart the throttle body (way too complicated). then I realized that to even get to the thermostat cover bolts the lower one is behind some sort of exhaust manifold(I think) being a novice at best to repairing cars I decided it was too much. Does anyone think I should give it another or have any advice on how to get to the lower cover bolt?

is a bit tricky, but i use a swivel socket. might try a uni adapter.

if you had pink dexcool coolant and replaced with green non dexcool unless the entire coolant system was drained and flushed this includes engine and heater . most likely you have a sludged coolant system.2005 should require coolant change in 2009-10 was car in accident or some coolant part failed?

I found out it was the water pump, there was a little liquid on the top of the hood directly above the serpentine belt. So I could tell the pump was leaking. I also realized I had Mechanical breakdown insurance so I didn't have to pay a dime, Only $90 for coolant flush(bye bye dex) and $21 for a gallon of coolant, which must have gold flakes in it like goldschlagger cause I had a gallon of extended life in my trunk that cost me $10.

I don't believe that a water pump leak at weep hole with the amount that you described would cause overheating. when they flushed system i hope that a new thermostat was installed......also electric fan test.
