Well i am currently re-doing my interior(in fact i just came in from sanding). What u need to do is to remove all of the peices that you want to paint. The your need to sand them down, then prime them, and then paint them how you want. Start off a lil bit at a time and do several layers of paint. You can use any type of paint. And if you want a glossy look then buy glossy paint and paint over. Anymore questions?

Here's the exact process that I used, and my interior came out looking proffessional. Hope it helps.

Materials/Tools required:
-- Primer.
-- Krylon Interior/Exterior paint
-- Clear Enamel
-- 320 grit sand-paper
-- Rubbing alcohol and Q-tips and/or cotton balls
-- Masking tape (also good to have masking tape with attached drop-cloth)
-- Various sockets/screw-drivers, etc. for removing pieces

A few words about technique/safety:
-- When spraying your primer, paint, or clear-coat, be sure to keep the tip of your finger out of the spray. Having your finger in the way will cause paint mist to build up on your fingertip, and the airflow will blow the built-up paint off your finger in the form of little droplets of paint. If these drops land on the piece you're working on, you might as well start over, cuz they look like crap. The same thing happens if you use a plastic pistol-grip attachment on your spray cans.
-- I can't say enough how important patience is. If you rush, you are going to make mistakes, and if you don't fix the mistakes (which is a huge hassle), you'll have a horrible looking interior. So it's best to just do it right the first time. Do whatever you can to avoid over-spraying the pieces. Personally, I smoked A LOT of cigarettes and drank A LOT of beer between applications, just to keep myself from using too much paint all at once.
-- I made the mistake of painting all my trim outside on my back deck. For some reason, bugs were really attracted to my paint and clear-coat, and kept landing on the pieces. They'd get stuck in the wet paint, and some of them are still visible in the finished pieces. If you have access to a well ventilated garage or paint-booth, I would highly recommend using it.
-- If you follow these steps, you'll end up with a durable, professional looking painted interior.
-- If you plan on painting your entire dash, or your gauge cluster cover, a really light color like white or bright yellow, be aware that on sunny days, it will be reflected onto your windshield, and in my opinion is a bit distracting, and can make it difficult to see sometimes.
-- Always spray paint in a well ventilated area.
-- This process is only meant to be used on plastic pieces. I have no experience painting vinyl-covered surfaces.

The Process:
Remove each piece that you want to paint (consult manual if unsure how to remove pieces).
Use the following process on each piece you want to paint:
-- Wash with soapy water to remove built-up dirt and grease.
-- Sand each surface you wish to paint with 320 grit sandpaper.
-- Swab each piece with rubbing alcohol to remove any left-over Armoral, finger grease, etc.
-- Wash again with soapy water to remove rubbing alcohol residue.
* at this point, be sure hold the pieces by the edges, or by surfaces that won't be visible. This is to avoid getting greasy finger-prints on the prepped surfaces.
-- Mask off any areas that you do not want to get paint on.
-- Apply 2 coats of primer. I used Rustoleum Primer.
* When I refer to "coats" I actually mean LOTS of really light applications of primer/paint. remember to take your time, spray a little bit, give it a few minutes, spray again, etc. Do whatever you have to in order to avoid soaking the pieces. You'll just get runs and sags like crazy.
-- Primer dries pretty quickly.
-- Once each coat dries, it's a good idea to lightly sand the primer with 320 grit paper. And sand after the 2nd coat as well.
-- After sanding each time, wash the piece again with soapy water to remove sanding dust.
-- Apply 3-4 coats of paint. I used Krylon Interior/Exterior paint from the local parts supply chain.
* Again, remember to take your time applying the paint. The Krylon takes a lot longer to dry than the primer does, so give it a bunch more time.
-- Once the paint has completely dried (I would give it at least 24 hours to be on the safe side), apply 2-3 coats of clear enamel. I used Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel for this.
* Same process as with the primer and paint steps.
-- Let the pieces dry again for at least 24 hours before handling. It's the most frustrating thing to spend all this time and energy on painting the pieces, only to put a fingerprint in them or scratch them with a screw-driver trying to install them while they're still a little soft. BE PATIENT!

Here is a pic of his interior, and it looks really good in person. Pics do not do it justice.

You can take everything off man, just look around and locate some of the bolts and screws needed to take them off.

I know you want a flexible paint and you don't just want to buy a glossy paint and paint over it, get a clear coat paint and paint that over it, add some protection to it. I think ami has a how to on her website, not to sure though. Just wait a while there should be someone who knows exactly how to do it. But he is right, take your time on it, don't get in a hurry.

And the dash, you can take the dash out, unless you want to mask your whole interior off just to leave it in.

yeah thats hot i think im gonna paint all of what he did but in red (and i don;t know if mines vynil covered) like the plastic has a rough texture to it like a design or some shit on the console and the steeroing wheel i think thats just how the plastic was molded though

guess im going to the store tomarrow or tonight suppost to get snowed in like 1-2 feet of snow so that will give me something to do all day :D

Heres a tip for painting anything on your car: Use clearcoat on anything you expect to last more than 2 weeks or else that shit is unprotected. Clearcoat maskes a like plastic like coating on for protection. And since your interior will get hot in the summer the heat will be hell on the paint. But if you clearcoat it should be ok or better.

heres my old interior using krylon:

it did chip cause of the cold weather otherwise it woulda worked out fine...clear coat is what makes it chip

Tony
02-16-2003, 04:28 PM
like i said, make sure the paint you use is a little bit flexible and don't rush it makin it dry. The faster it drys, the less flexible it is.

My door panel has extreme sun damage. It is so bad it went all the way to the core of the door, anyone know how i should fix it?

ci5ic
02-16-2003, 07:48 PM
The how-to that I wrote is ONLY to be used for painting hard plastice pieces, NOT vinyl (door panels/dash, etc).

Also, don't use solvent based cleaners to clean the painted pieces once they are done... also Armorall, etc will rub the paint off... 90civicrider says that he uses something called "spray nine" that works perfectly... hit him up for more details.

blueturtle
02-16-2003, 08:56 PM
so do i use the clear coat after the enamel?

and what should i use to paint my dash then i think im just gonna try it the same way

blueturtle
02-17-2003, 07:48 AM
i mean all i was gonna do was sand all my shit in the house then do the primer today but tomarrow is the painting part

i don;t think the cold will make it crack or anything

Civic Rush
02-17-2003, 07:57 AM
where ever you paint it should be warm otherwise it will not stick and it will crack. Warm it up somehow
:D

02-17-2003, 08:05 AM
ok what about this i spray it outside and then bring it all inside (on some wood so not to touch it)

i want ti just spray it in my basement but my moms all like no bitch then the smell will go all over the house im trying to tell her that it won;t but she';s being a wanker

Civic Rush
02-17-2003, 08:39 AM
do you have a space heater or something that you can use to warm up you garage. And as for painting inside just set up a fan afterwords. They wont be any smell. My wife yells at me all of the time for doing shit like that. But they will get over it. LOL:D

blueturtle

what i need to know how to get off is the vents on the door and the dash board i wanna get those to be red too

and how do u take off the dash?

Stali08
02-17-2003, 11:35 AM
all u have to do is just pop the H off the steering wheel, then there should be a nut behind that, take that off and just pull it off. Thats how i was told.

Tony
02-17-2003, 11:39 AM
my steering wheel is simple, just pop the horn off, there is a giant bolt right there, take it off and walla, steering wheel is off, the fun part is getting it lined back up when you put it back on.

Stali08

Yea that makes me feel better about putting on a new steering wheel, just have to make sure u dont turn the little thing when the steering wheel is off right?

Oh and 1990civic that interior is hot.

umm yeah so how do i take all of the vents off??

Jmunk
02-17-2003, 12:46 PM
To me painting the interior is only a temporary way to do it. If you want to do it right that vinyl it or dye the pieces. Vinyl can be found at a fabric store pretty cheap, my friend did his whole for about $35.00. You have to have some patience to do vinyl but the results are worth it, and they don't wear like spray paint.

blueturtle
02-17-2003, 12:56 PM
yeah but if you clear coat the paint with enamel it will last

i'm wanting to change my interior color from maroon to either gray or black, which colors were offered on 4 doors? the other question is would it be easier to paint the whole dash and components or find a donor car and swap everything? i'm kinda thining the latter b/c of the doors, deats, and roof (which is tan)

you dont have to take the wheel off, you can just drop the steering column, ther are 2 bolts holding it up under the dash, take those bolts out, and sccot ur seet back and it drops the the floor and out of your way :-D

To clean the paint off you can use Pro Form Plastic parts cleaner. It is actually to clean the plastic and vinyl before painting it also opens up the pours in the plastic so that the dye soaks in. but it also takes off paint if you screw up!
