burning the oil why??????

help :confused: i am burning oil really bad with my montero and its not leaking what would be the first thing to get looked at when your burning a quart every 250 miles:confused:

any blue smoke at all? if so, when exactly? or
any leaks on the ground?

there is quite alot of smoke but no blue smoke and no leaks oil changed 1500 miles twice to try to help but no luck im leading tords a headgaskit:smoker2:

our '89 leaks/burns oil. Not nearly as bad now, although that could be due to our sinking ~$1100 into replacing just about every thing rubber on the engine (excluding head gaskets). Does it still eat oil? Yep. Not nearly as bad now. It turns out I never saw the oil leak because the skid plate under the engine was collecting it all. Heh, the mechanic said I had quite a bit of oil just sitting in the plate.

I'm content to buy a case of oil and just add about half a quart every two weeks. It's just not worth another ~1500-2000 for replacing all the head gaskets.... 8-)

My brother has a 91 Montero and we have performed valve seals replacements, two times in it's life span, due to that same reason you mentioned. The last time at around 160K miles. That and a computer is the only troubles he has had with his Montero.

If you have a 3.0 litre engine, here's what I've found out through my two monteros. See if you burn the oil at start up, with one quick blow of smoke. Also let it idle for a minute or so, then hit the gas. If you blow that shot of smoke as with start up, it's the valve guides on the exhaust side, not the seals. They were designed inferior. They were pessed into the heads. If you ever get the heads redone, or a valve job, make sure when they put the new guides in they use the clips that hold the guides in place. Just pressing them in won't last. They get loose and the oil drips down to the pistonsw hen you shut the car down, or at idle. The oil builds up and when you hit the gas, you burn it up. Check your plugs as they will indicate alot too. Good luck.

Thanks for replying.....So far we're just living with it, the oil burn doesn't seem that bad at all..adding maybe a quart every month or two....However, I've noticed relatively recently that the smoke is more white than black, suggesting to me that perhaps antifreeze is getting burnt. It's especially bad at startup, but after driving for a bit, it disappears

God knows, this montero has been better than all the ford/mercury's I've owned..pieces of junk them..... 8-) It's just all the rubber that's finally going after 14 years..... 8-)

TO dcap63: Where did you get those Valve guides? Did you have to go to a Dealer?

My friend was "living with a quart per week" for some months.
On a long trip it sucked all the oil out. Kinda suddenly. Now the crank is ruined.
So we have to pull the engine, and get it all done, and I'm sure we must replace the GUides. Please tell me what you know about them.

my 95 montero used to burn a lot of oil, didn't know what the prob was, no leaks anywhere that anyone could find and no smoke, so like some of the rest of you I just use a thicker oil now and add oil more often.
