ok my friend is selling a b16 to either me or my older bro for his 91 integra. if i buy then ill get the b16 but if my bro gets it he will put it in his teg and i would put the b18 in mine. im kinda confused on what to get. they both are good motors, 1 vtec other non but plan on gettin ls/vtec if i do go b18. still tryin to decide. the good thing is that i have until march to know what i really want. what do u guys think ?

If your bro gets the b16...will he give you his b18 for free? IF so then go for the b18. IF you decide to get the b16..how much is ur friend gonna sell it to u for?

This isn't that hard of a decision do you want HP or torque ? You cna get HP but you won't get any torque out of the B16a (the toque less wonder). Or you could get the B18a with equal amounts of torues anf HP (about 130 HP and torque vs. b16a's 160 Hp) I would go with the B16a becuase than you could put a VTEC sticker on your car. LOL

i have both motors the b18a in my ef an a b16a2 in my eg i can tell you that they are night an day i find that with the b16 pulls all the way to 120 for me but you have to redline all the gears an stay in the vtec range I would get the b16 if you wanted all out speed but to me the b18a is more fun for tearing up the redlights an not worry bout getting caught doing 120 in a 55 :bloated: also my b18a gets better gas mileage

btw, LS/VTEC is NOT a simple bolt on process. it is rather hard to do it the right way.

Thats because its the ls tranny with there long gears. Anyways yeh b16 is good at top end and ls motor is good at bottom end but sucks at top end. Like Jmunk says it depends on what ur lookin for. Hp or torque? :)

The latest issude of Honda Tuner has a How-To on the LS/VTEC thing, it is not an easy thing, machining is needed.

The b16 would win at the 1/4 mile. THe ls would take off on the line but thats about it.

Fuck, the B18A has like 15 more lbs-ft. of torque than the B16.. The B16 isn't torqueless.. Sure, it doesn't make much power in the low RPM, but when you're racing with a B16 your revs aren't going to be dropping any lower than 6000 anyway, so who cares about torque?!
B16 would be the faster motor. B18 would be better if you want to pull a trailer or something.
The B18A is a nice motor, I like them.. But don't start to compare them to a B16A.

Also why I'm building an LS block for the future of my car, but comparing the two motors stock (if you want to go fast) the B16 is better, and I believe its a better platform for cheap realiable power.

One of my friends said that a b16b would be better for turbo because it has good torque and no vtec. He sais vtec makes the turbo work harder. Is this true and if it is how can i correct it with my motor of choice, the b16.

Do I HAVE to start correcting people on how power is a product of torque x RPM AGAIN!!!!!! What a stupid fucking comment to make :loser:
Torque means fuck all if your car cant rev out and if you REALLY want to get into the nitty-gritty, the B16A has one of the most linear torque-curves of a NA engine.
Personally I'd go the B18 VTEC over either engine instead of LSVTEC, simply on cost and reliability. If I was going to dick around with frankenstein it'd be using a B20 block with everything else forged for reliability.
B16A and NOT for the sticker.

anywho no one answered the question on page 1 about what if you have LS engine (b18B mind you, thats what i have waiting to be transplanted) with a b16 tranny, would top end power thats b18 lacks be any better? if not what can i do to improve its top end, i was thinking about putting in pistons and rods before i put it in to do a basic build up of the bottom end, will that help my top end power?????????????????????

Well, I know the B20 is better than the B18. But, I repeatadly beat B16's with some pretty heavy mods, until the top of fourth gear, and 100+ mph. So, basically I beat them.

A tranny will do absolutly nothing for how much power your motor produces.
You can read here on how different gearings work. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm
Or least you used to be able to.

Its not gonna make a big difference but yeh it'll feel faster but not really. IF you want to improve top end. I'd get p&p head with upgraded cams , springs, the whole valvetrain. Get a skunk2 manifold and build your bottom end to like 11:5 cr and i guess you can throw in aftermarket rods. Get your crankshaft polish, lighter flywheel (itr flywheel will be great and its cheap to). So yeh i guess thats about it for now:wink:

ok what does getting my crankshaft polished gonna do for me? i was under the impression that the crankshaft is something you really only mess with if your doing some serious serious money dumping into your engine seeing that getting aftermarket crankshaft is 1000 and more, but getting it polished what the hell is that gonna do, sounds like it would cost a lot too. My point of getting pistons and rods was because i figured, correct me if im wrong, that building up bottom end would be harder and more exspensive once i already have my engine in and dont really want to take it out, i figured i can work on the head later since it is a lot less easier to get to, transport, etc. So for a moderately built bottom end what should i do, i am looking for improvements in power, mostly top end, and to help my motor last longer, make it stronger for when i beat the hell out of it.
Give me some feedback

Ok well then build up your head just as i mentioned above. Get your ecu chipped. About the crankshaft , if you get it all blueprinted and balance you can build your bottom end to handle high rpm.

Crankshaft polishing makes it look nice and shiney:wink: Knife edging the counterweights on them however supposedly cuts down rotational mass as it spins through the vapour in the oil pan. However, I've noticed that modern engines dont run large counterweights so the point is questionable.

too allu guys who have no hope in the tired old b18a u guys are right motor is nothin to compare to a b16a until i put a s1 b16a tranny onto my b18a i'm telling you there nothin like have high torque arite horsepower and short gears by the way those cable b16a trannys are the same gear ratios as a typer only they don't all come with lsd and the don't go a final drive of 478.5 but i only started to like my b18a motor after the tranny was changed and i raced my friends honda crx with a b16a and i took him by a car length and a half and i never chipped my computer i rev it straight to 7 rpm i'm tellin u if u do the non vtec ls up it can be very strong right now my eninge just came out of the shop and i turned the ls into a monster i put 3 grand into it the ls block is a very strong block belive me when i tell u this don't be fooled did u guys know that the ls block has a displacement of 1837 while type r and gsr stand at 1797cc u have to understand that i'm not talkin shit i never used to think b18a was fast i was goin swap it for a b16 or b18c until i learned about it sure ur high speed isn't so great but on the streets u can be talked to trust me
