Well, im planning on possiblyputting a 2.4l in my car and for sure a turbo charger before i race him. despite what you guys say i still think i will own some ford ass hahaha. one big factor is going to be the driver difference. Me being the better driver.

both stock---mustang hands down....makes way more HP and is lighter...those monte's are very very heavy pigs....the 305ss only made about 180hp and would run mid 15's...

I own an '88 Grand Prix with a 2.8L V6 auto.. and I know how to drive it. Even though it probably has around the same HP as a stock ecotec, its got more torque.
I raced a friend who has a 5-speed Cavalier (not a Z), and from the lights I held on and as my engine got into higher RPMs in 2nd gear I was starting to have him.... but this was on a city street so I really don't know who would have won in a 1/4 mile race.
At the track I got smoked by a Sunfire GT (2.4L, DOHC). It ran low 16s.. i forget the number. The car appeared to be more of a "show" than "go".. but I have no idea what mods if any.
Once on the street I got smoked by a mid-late 90s Mustang GT (I think once he realized I was trying to go fast he put his foot down....... GONE!)
I've test drove a Sunfire GT auto, and it was quicker than my car, but I didn't get a chance to give it WOT with the saleman next to me.
My GF has a 95 Sunfire 4 door.. whatever base engine it has i dunno..
My GP would beat it in acceleration probably up to 80km (50mph), but after 80 or so the lightness of the car and higher RPM HP make it faster
I've also test drove a 98? Mustang with a 4.6L in it. It was a fast car and I could feel the real power of a V8 with good low end HP and real torque.
My conclusion..
An ecotec (SOHC) doesn't really stand much of a chance against a Stang with a V8. The Ford simply has way more torque to take it off the line, and has more HP to keep it running down the track.
On the other hand, the 2.4DOHC, the NEW 2.2DOHC (replacing the 2.4L) or a H.O. Quad would put up a fight with high HP figures. Gotta have a good driver for it though.
If I wanted to race and a Mustang 5.0 I'd get a DOHC engine and do the basic mods.
Also- the 305s in the Cutlass don't feel like they have much power. I think they would do 17s or higher, cause of the transmission. I know cause I almost bought one that was in mint shape with an engine that sounded perfect. It had absolutley no torque for a V8 RWD! I couldn't get it to do a damn breakstand, and from a stop hammering on the gas I was lucky to get a chip from a tire. Sorry guy, but a Monte or other car with a 305 would beat you good. Change the transmission and I'll change my oppinion. I was almost going to buy the Cutty but instead I got my 88 GP cause its more fun.
If I wanted to race and BEAT the Mustang, give me a 97+ Grand Prix GTP! Supercharged 3.8L V6 SMOKE HIS ASS
