06 Impala - tire eater?

I have an 06 Impala, and I just had to replace the 2 front tires at 35k miles. I rotated them and still the front tires wore away (the outer edges). I rotated my tires, so I will need to replace the other 2 GY with Generals. I had the alignment checked and it was OK.

I replaced the GY Integrity (nice name, huh) to General Altimax. The were recommended by many people and had good ratings on tirerack.com

I have noticed a lot of 06 Impalas on the road with new tires on the fronts, something other than GY.

Anyone else had to replace the GY tires?

Reads like an under inflation problem, if you check air yourself perhaps your gage is off by a few lbs. you can figure on losing a lb per month in each tire. gages can be calibrated against a known good dial gage.

buy a high quality air gauge. after installing new tires inflate to 30psi then get chalk and strike a line across face of tire drive 10-20feet and observe how chalk is worn .should not wear 1inch in on outer tread. increase to 35psi etc until this is accomplished . I believe 35-37 psi in front and 28 psi in rear will give good tread wear across total face of tire. when temperatures fall tire pressures will also use nitrogen gas if possible. check for leaks esp. around rims if pressure still drops. check weekly to get an idea how good the tires hold pressures. make sure you have caps on valve stems................

I have to say, this happened to me as well with integrity's on my 06. I bought some GY Assurance TripleTreads and they seem fine. I would say it's not quite as smooth of a ride though.

Assurance Triple treads are certainly a good tire to replace stock tires, though they seem to have a bit more lean around turns, yet a bit rougher ride. However, they will last a long time. Mine have 40k miles on them and haven't even gone through half of their treadlife. I drove 130 miles the other day through snowy roads and had little trouble still. Make sure you keep air in them, as they lose it a little faster than normal.

To the original poster, no car will eat tires on its own. It's operator error somewhere. Since you said it was aligned ok, as others have said, check your tire pressure. Also, how hard do you drive? THat can have a massive effect on tire life, as can the area through which you drive.

High speed interstate drivin,g especially on roads paved using silica chips can be tough on tires. I cannot get over 35-40k on both my vehicles, this type driving.

Thanks for the information. I have GY Triple Treads on my 02 Impala, will not buy them again. I have about 50k miles on them and I need to get new ones. The treadwear around the edges is poor. The tires get regular checkups at oil changes (tire pressure and balancing, part of package when I bought them)and they are OK. Will use General Tire Altimax (good tires and handles well) next time.

Tire pressures need to be checked on a monthly basis, this fyi only...not getting on your case in any way...

I notice this outer edge wear too (2001 Impala LS, 3.8L) -- Problem is not the tires, but that the stock/factory alignment specs have too much camber, such that at ride height, the top edges of the tires are out further than the lower edge (when looking at them from the front -- with the 225/60 tires, when the wheels are straight ahead, the tires do not sit totally flat on the road -- this is likely a road "crown" adjustment that is not useful on the highway which typically does not have a crown going down the center of the lane.

I don't know the alignment specs for the Impala, but there could also be too much toe-in (front tire edges closer together than the rear edges) -- this would also cause excessive wear to the outer edges of the tires.

* Factory specs are usually a gross compromise -- a "good" alignment shop that understands the symptoms (and how to use the alignment machine) should be able to adjust/correct the factory specs to your driving conditions.

I put General Altimax HP tires on my 06 Impala. They have been rotated accordingly and tire pressure checked.

The car still likes to eat front tires. Oh well, I will live with it. The General Tires lasted longer than the GY's (factory tires). Plus the Generals were put on and had alignment done as well.

My 02 Impala has same tires and wear is good. Alignment done as well.

I guess the 06-present Impala generation likes tires. I look at this generation's front tires (in prking lots) and I see the front wear as I had. I even talk to the owners and explain. Hear the same old story, new tires at about 20k, the factory tires wear too quick.
