So I had a po 705 on my 2000 windstar. The od light would flash only in park and then for the first 200-300 yards in drive. After tracing the wires, making sure the alternator, battery, starter were all ok I replaced the transmission range sensor. The problem is now resolved (so far anyway). I've been 1 full day without problems. Before when I'd reset the code it would occur immediately upon selecting drive.
If you are replacing this sensor the alignment tool isn't really needed. Make sure the gear selector is in N. Getting the old sensor off was almost impossible. I had to destroy it to remove it off the shaft. The plastic and metal shaft had essentially fused. Once off the shaft and the shaft cleaned the new one installed pretty quickly.
This sensor is digital and previous years (when I'm not 100% sure) were analogue and very prone to failure. The digital ones seem much more reliable. This is all a direct quote from my local Ford service advisor. He didn't think the problem was my range sensor. I wonder if he wanted the job vs me doing it.
Anyway, seems like my problem is gone.
