Mirror courtesy lights will not shut off

Hi all -
Great forum. I have a 2002 Impala, 3400, that the courtesy lights on the mirror will not shut off when the driver's door is closed, unless it is locked with the keyless fob. Locking the door externally with the door key will not turn them off either. I changed the lock switch assembly in the door, no help, but a PITA to change. If I lock the door (with the fob) with it open, the lights are still on until I close the door, then they dim to off, so I feel the door switch is working. Where is the next logical move?
