It's a good thing i pulled the ICM / ECM fuses before hooking up the battery. I was gonna test the car and found that i left it in neutral with the key on!! (had to rotate the motor forward yet again to tighten the backside bolt of the smog pump).
I did the idle relearn for 10 minutes and drove it through Portland and Vancouver, no problems. Also, the LED instrument panel works as it should. I think the VSS was confusing the panel, now it works fine, no erratic blinking. Got mph, gas level, odometer.
whew! Nice to have a running car again.
Happy New Year!

So what was the problem?

So what was the problem?
I think the start of the problem was a shorted VSS that was confusing my dash. Then i had bad wiring (shorted)/conduit to the 3X sensor and most likely a bad 3X crankshaft sensor. I also replaced the 24X sensor just on principle along with the ICM (my original was 14 years old), then finally a nice new goodyear belt tensioner and new serpentine and smog belts.
So a couple shorts and two bad sensors (3X and VSS)

One thing though. If i just turn the key on w/o starting it, the check engine light stays on. Once i start it, it goes away. Is this normal? I tried using the special GM key (short a/b) to read codes, but i just hear this weird sound and quit that quicklike.

As long as the light goes out when the engine is started, it is fine.
