I have been watching this thread from the beginning, and I've got to tip my hat to you..great work, excellent paint skills, detailing, and man those engine lid shocks...just wow...great stuff man. I look forward to seeing the finished product. I'd say you are now up there with the top builders up here, and as I say with everyone else's top notch work, yours inspires me to try a liittle harder on each kit I build.

Great work man..good luck with the rest of the build.

Not much else to add other than IT'S AWESOME WORK THERE!

It's also great narration and pics that you are using on the WIP thread that adds to the fun of it. I am looking forward to seeing the completed car.

There are so many things in this build that I want(ed) to incorporate in some of mine! And now I have seen great ingenuous ways to do them. Absolutely fantastic work.

You are doing a simply amazing job! Every time i lax off on mine i come look at yours and it inspires me to do better and get back to work on mine. I should have mine done in a week or 2. Hopefully.

Awesome job man, i almost wish i wasn't doing mine box stock and could incorporate some of the ideas and techniques you are using... Amazing

Really great work on those gas struts for the back hatch. I would have made that much harder and more complicated.... Great stuff.

Thanks for the education...

i'm not sure if some one has asked this yetor if it is acurate, but is there some way to polish the PE parts or maybe create a brushed look on the cowl??

Thanks for the comments. I'll try to get back to the updates soon, but I'm a bit busy here with work stuff. The good news is that I solved a problem that was holding things up a bit, just a painting issue, nothing that interesting. Oh, and one of the headlight lenses fell out!, so I got to try Joe's Future suggestion, and it works beautifully - no mess, no runs, and it's holding well.

i'm not sure if some one has asked this yetor if it is acurate, but is there some way to polish the PE parts or maybe create a brushed look on the cowl?? You're talking about the shiny Ferrari engine emblems right? The PS set has emblems which would probably look better, but I have a feeling the font on them is slightly off compared to the Tamiya metal stickers. I'll check 'em out and maybe do a swap. Thanks for pointing it out, much appreciated!

Sorry that what i said was misleading but what i ment was that the PE parts that made up the rear cowl looked rough(as in scratched and sanded) and i was wondering if there was a way to make it to look smoother. Like in this pic, it appears rough.http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP10/IMGP0408.jpg

That only rquires a drop of primer to fill the scratches on stuff like that. Metal shows scratches SO much more than any other material...well, except glass maybe.

Your are right!!! I think on this part it doesn't matter because the scratches will be hidden by the rear window.

Well, I've been going pretty slowly, in dribs and drabs but I've got a few items to show now. Actually there was a very big West Coast show last weekend (NNL West) which I wanted to attend and maybe meet some AFers. So I had to toss something together for that. I'll post a thread on NNL West soon, it was an amazing meet - unbelievable builds and plenty of amazing characters to meet.

I needed to finish up some big ticket items for the show. The biggest were the doors and windows. As I said in another thread somewhere, I wanted the windows to be removable, for that summer feel :) Didn't really know if it would work out, but here's how I set about it...

After trimming off the molded-in trim, I had to polish the glass up. I used micromesh on a hard flat surface to prevent any rounding over of the window edges.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0220.jpg

I didn't think it was possible really, but they came up very well. No more fear of polishing glass, err, I mean plastic...:grinyes:
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0223.jpg

To hold the windows in place I used PE CA'd into a little notch. The sprue tabs left some damage in the window, damn it. It's barely noticeable on the car, so nothing too disastrous. I tried soaking some glue into it but only got marginal improvement. I might have been able to sand them down, but didn't realize until it was too late. Oh well, live and learn...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0237.jpg

This joint is surprisingly strong, I though it would just fall apart.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0240.jpg

Et voila...

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0254.jpg

Here's an interesting challenge. I did some experiments and much prefered using cement to hold the mirror on - it creates a joint that looks just like the 1:1. But one mistake and it's curtains!!! This little arrangement has the tweezers carefullly balanced so that I can line up, glue, and then lower the mirror very slowly and very precisely into place. It worked beautifully - seriously, the mirror joint looks amazing! (lol, time to see a shrink I think :screwy:)
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0245.jpg

The grills were done earlier - from the kit mesh, it looks best by far on the diagonal I think. The PE set had them done square, so I didn't use them, the kit mesh looked better anyway imho.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0266.jpg

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0269.jpg

Metal stickers and license plate done. Extremely ugly molded-in kit exhaust grills were cut out and replaced with nice PE version (nice, but a lousy fit).
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0261.jpg

Nice and shiny for the big show! But nowhere near finished :grinyes: (NNL West thread coming soon)
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0256.jpg

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0260.jpg

Here's some work I completed since the show last weekend.

Stripped the chrome off the kit exhaust tips...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0026.jpg

Then accidentally gave them a swim in lacquer thinner. DOH!!!! :banghead: Oh well, they were junk anyway, so I made some polished aluminium tips.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0033.jpg

Now here is something different. I insist on the body being detachable from completed model. This is really hard to do with this kit - it has you glue the tips on after the body is closed up. Shock horror - NO WAY!!!! I computed several sneaky ways to get around this, but in the end kept coming back to this whacky idea. I will hang the tips off the internal rear light frames on the body, instead of attaching them to the exhaust pipes on the chassis! Seems nuts, but it works for me! :licka:
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0036.jpg

The tips are CA'd onto PE frames. They're super shiny - basically mirrors. I hope it doesn't start to look weird with oxidization over time. I'll repolish and clear them if that happens.

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0054.jpg

Just a tad larger than the kit tips, they look nice and fat!
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP11/IMGP0052.jpg

I can't believe it's still not finished, but the last little details seem to soak up a lot of my (limited;-() time.

But real soon now!!!

Very nice work. What psi did you use on your mist and heavy coats for the base and clear?
The silver was sprayed around 15 psi, it's just a little bit dry, gives a very sharp metallic finish. Form the can gives a slightly "plasticy" finish. I don't think it matters though, once the final clear goes down. The clear was straight from the can, I might try decanting it next time.

NSX Fan: Those scratches are microscopic, paint covers easily, and actually, I think it's best to slightly rough up the PE before painting.

Thanks for the questions.

Yeh, I had my eye on the fogging issue. I have some odorless CA which prevents that, but it's not as strong, so I went with the super hot stuff and kept blowing on it to keep the fumes off the plastic!

I wanted to ask you guys, any suggestions for how to add amber side markers? They're so damn small, and I'm not sure if it's safe to drill a hole through the side should that be required.

Before I painted my 612's I drilled a hole in each side, then heated and stretched some clear sprue, snipped it, round the edges, painted it with some clear orange, and placed it in the hole, gluing it from the inside. It worked perfectly.

Nice idea going with the aluminium tips. Glad you messed up the plastic ones because the aluminium tips actually look real. I also used a aluminium exhaust tip on my Nismo 400R yesterday after messing up the plastic pipe I hand made. My skills don't even come close to yours though. Keep it up buddy.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I LOST THIS THREAD FROM THE BEGINNING!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I found it, now, I'm impressed to the bones!!!!!
This is one of the best, most impressive jobs I have seen here!
So clean, so sharp, so awesome, everything is so meticulously and perfectly done!

Well, in regards of the side markers, yes, it is worth the effort, I just made them on my 550, and it is not hard, and the results are nice.

What I did is to heat a transparent orange sprue, then stretched it to obtain a thin orange bit, which I sanded to a rounded end, then I made a hole through the body, this, just to ensure the side marker wont fall with handling, then I glued it from the inside and added in the outside a little ring of thiny black wire for the bezel.

Congratulations again on one of the best, finesse modeling executions on AF

Hats off Sr. and have all my respect!

Yay! I got some more work done, enough for a couple of updates :grinyes:

Tonight's update is something I've been amping over since I started this build. I was worried it wouldn't turn out that great but I got a bit lucky in discovering an interesting use for the PE.

The 360 has a gorgeous door sill plate. For the sills in my SLR I just used silver paint and the kit metal sticker which looked ok, but not all that inspiring.

Nice eh?
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/1188084951-doorsil.jpg

Start with a template...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0195.jpg
(I actually got this wrong - that template is too short and I ended up building longer plates, not seen here)

The PE set includes some Ferrari logos which happen to be the right size for the sills. But just sticking them on would look lousy, so I played around with embossing some sheet aluminium. I lined up the logo on the front side, then pressed down the back of the sheet with a q-tip and toothpick.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0197.jpg

A bit of experimenting led to an ok result (I did better ones with more practice). Technically not perfect as it has a few extra links and lines in it, I didn't try to fix that though it could probably be done.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0206.jpg

The folding was done with my poor-man's PE bending jig...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0212.jpg

Fits nicely, though again, this one is too short and I remade longer ones after this! The sill has a soft curve to it, I pushed a small piece of wood around that outer fold to get it to conform to the curve.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0209.jpg

Not bad...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP12/IMGP0216.jpg

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the sills. Despite the brutal close-up snaps, they do look pretty effective at arm's length.

The material is KS .005" aluminium sheet. It's stiffer than kitchen foil but still quite easy to work with.

The scratches after the tooth-pasting were largely because I didn't prep it well enough, but the bottom line is that the tooth paste thing is just too damn slow, it was taking forever. The problem is that you can't really polish it before it's bent, and it can't take any stress after it's bent. I also wanted more of that frosty look and I remembered dunking an aluminium box in strong caustic soda once. The resulting concoction boiled and spewed and almost exploded (Warning: I'm serious, the reaction is incredibly violent and the gas that spews forth is highly noxious) But the box came out looking amazing!, all even, white and frosty. So I tried Clorox - basically the same idea (caustic etch) on a small scale. It's strong enough to remove light scratches. I did give it a light rubbing with micromesh first, but fear not, it will remove fine scratches ok.

Here's the other work I finished recently. I asked a while back about the amber side markers. The answers I got convinced me that I needed to drill a hole in the body to do the job properly. Here's the story...

A previous attempt. I took some amber sprue and made these minuscule little cones. Far too small to work by hand, the rod you can see has a conical hollow in the end which I used to hold the lights while I sanded down to the correct size. They came out perfectly, but the problem is, when you get down to this amount of plastic the color just fades away to nothing. I could have painted them but that sort of defeats the purpose, plus I have no answer for getting that foil behind them and attaching to the car rigidly.

I also tried a pin head shaped in the Dremel. Looks promising...

It'll mount through a hole and the flange will make for a nice seamless finish against the body.

In place and painted. Ouch! Looks like crap!

I guess you just have to have some transparency in there to get a realistic look. Admittedly, this was a horrible polish and paint job, so ymmv.

So back to the orange plastic, this time it will have more depth to it, as it goes through the hole in the body.

The Dremel makes for a great lathe.

I put a bit more shape into them, the cones look a bit bland imho.

They come with a light switch :grinyes:
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0070.jpg

The transparency makes them more life-like.

A bit of finger grease here by the look of it!

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0074.jpg

I wrapped them in foil to try to capture the glow. I suspect this is not the best way to do it, but it'll do.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0082.jpg

Makes it a bit darker with a bit of a glow.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0087.jpg

Now, the 3rd brake light. The kit decal is just a blob of red, looks very ordinary. I needed to get some texture into the foil, best I could do was this file. I really wanted a very fine cross-hatch pattern but couldn't find anything suitable (we're talking *very* fine here...)
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0012.jpg

This came up nicely, the color is superbly rich with nice depth and transparency to it.
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0018.jpg

And the shine is just unbelievable. That's not orange or purple in there, it's reflections and what have you...
http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x97/mrmodels/Ferrari%20360%20Modena/WIP13/IMGP0001.jpg

This is cool - I can cut shapes out of this material with scissors. For lights, reflectors, etc.

After:

The light will look very good I think, but what I really wanted was this:

I tried but failed to pull it off - anyone up for the challenge???

Mark,
Awesome update, I keep referring back to your thread for info while building my 360 CS, if only I had the skills to try opening the doors. Thanks for the how-to on the amber side markers I'm going to try that out on mine.

This thread is like an encyclopedia of great modeling ideas. Unfortunately, I have to now close up my 360 and never look at it again. This is a piece of art! :grinyes:

I hope you realize how much everyone is drewling over this model. It's an utterly beautiful build!

have you thought of fiber optic cable for lights? i know its a stretch but perhaps you could camoflage the light gathering end somewhere in the body. just a thought. Im sure you'll figure something out. cheers

Hi !

You are amazing.

I want to see more. I am curious, do you specialize in Ferrari's, or if your interest is to many brand and type of cars ?

I will follow this build for sure. Just one more thing, what was the paint color and brand that you used for this car ?

George
