2002 sable blinking check engine light

My check engine light started blinking when I was on a short drive. Is is okay to drive it round trip 40 miles if necessary before getting it serviced? Or should I rent a car?

It means that the problem is serious and can cause damage to the cat converter and possibly a fire as the misfiring will cause the cat to get extra hot.

Get to your dealer immediately; drive slowly, avoiding heavy acceleration and deceleration.
