Blue smoke

Today after approx. 1 hour of interstate driving I pulled off the road to use my cell phone, ( aren't you guys proud of me for that ) ? I left the car ideling while I made the call, then when I pulled back onto the road I noticed a rather large puff of blue smoke from the exhaust. This is a 93 GM, 105 K, oil changed every three thousand. I have noticed for the past few months the oil would be a quart low at change time, but this is the first time I've noticed the smoke. Is it rings? valve guide seals? or could there be something less expensive wrong. Car runs good, good power, etc.

I drive a 93 GM with 147 K on it and it does the same thing. Especially when I get off the highway. I've seen most of them from this year doing it also. I'm not sure why. A guy at the auto parts store gave me a big story about the egr valve and catalytic converter problems that were redesign in the later models.

Your problem is more than likely valve stem seals. The tell tell sign is it does iot after idle time. If it clears up really quickly, more than likely the seals are breaking apart due to the heat cycles of the engine.

Thanks for the replys, Way2old how expensive is it to have the valve seals replaced? I am a bit reluctant to do this as a few years ago on a company vehicle , they had some valve work done and a keeper came loose a day later and dropped the valve onto the piston which caused a disaster the Ford dealer wouldn't claim. Yeah, they lost future business.
What is a ball park price by an independent mechanic? Thanks

All I can tell you is to call around your area and get some prices. We do not repair general population vehicles and therefore I don't know what the repair hours are. Subscription to repair expired and have to have parts department pay for it so I can check these things. Good luck.
