replacing the head gasket tips

OK so I am about to save myself $1500 by replacing the head gasket myself. I have done this before on a Datsun inline 6. Pretty easy and straight forward. So my question is for those who have done this before. I have a 97 SC1. Who knows some tricks or things to watch out for? Any special tools needed for this? How long did it take you to do it? I know my way around cars and have a manual on the car. I just need to know what problems others have found.

Thanks a bunch people.

Did you find a nasty milkshake-like substance in your coolant tank?

Be very careful to thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces. You may also want to take the head to a machine shop and at least have it checked for warpage. Make sure you have an accurate torque wrench and follow the torque procedure EXACTLY.

nothing in the tank.

I will take the head in to make sure it is flat. I will also make sure the surface will be clean.

I am looking for timing chain tips that are not stated in the book.

I am just trying not to spend more time or money due to a stupid mistake.

99% of the time, on these SOHC engines, the gasket is fine but the head cracks, FWIW.

damn I hope that is the case. The guy that tested the head said that it was fine but warped. So he machined it flat but I still have the same issue of it over heating.
