auto tranny issues(long bt detailed post)

Hello
my son has a 91 sc1 with 1.9 DOHC a/t
got the car with a bad tranny,would only hift into 1st no reverse or any other gear..got another tranny(salvage yard) out of the same 91sc1 Dohc was suppose to be running good when removed from that car.got it put in and new fluid and filter,on 1st try it seemed fine test drive it shifted hard into 1st for alittle bit and quit,,seemed to run great..drove it for about an hour got it home and tried the gears again HARD shift into 1st and reverse now but shifted fine into the other gears,shut it off for awile went to go drive it again same reverse drive hard shift..and would not shift out 1st unless i put it into 3rd..
came home checked the wires on top of the trany notice 2 had been taped but looks fine..removed the connection was alittle tranny fluid and junk there cleaned it out well and back together..test drive same thing but not as hard a shift in drive and none in reverse.but still would not shift unless it was in 3rd..and felt like it wanted to die when put in gear ,diagnostics test showed no codes...i do have more connection wires for the top of the tranny can i splice them and put them onto the other connector? and any suggestions for the odd shifting pattern would be GREATLY appreciated
