Battery could be bad. The lights in a car draw very little power compared to the starter. A battery can power lights to full brightness but not have enough power to even make the starter solenoid click.

why was it parked to begin with? could be a bad alternator, or a few other things, try a jump start and look for the battery dash light.

If its an automatic, try wiggling the shift lever to make sure its in park - cause it wont start if the tranny thinks its in gear. If its a standard tranny, push the clutch pedal down and pump it up and down while you have the key turned - same type of reason, a safety interlock that might be cruddy from sitting.
If a car has been sitting a while, I always clean the battery posts and the battery cable terminals with the blade of an exacto knife, to get the lead-oxide off the surfaces.

won't start and electrical assercys inop, sounds like a drained battery, again, try a jump start. do you have any power anywhere?

if the switch was wired so that the fan could run with the engine off that would drain the battery, otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

the problem with the side terminal battery is that sometimes(very common with the AC Delco brand)they leak from the terminal. if the issue is not remedied, the acid/oxide build-up can damaged the battery cable as well.

Doesn't matter what the battery looks like. Take it out and have it tested.
