Alternator help

I'm in the process of putting a nice sound system in my 1996 Saturn SW1 and need to replace the Alternator with a beefier one. I need a little bit of help as to where to find a beefier alternator for the Saturns. Does anybody know of anywhere to get one at? Local pickup would be nice because of the core cost and everything but if I have to I wouldn't mind getting online. I do prefer NIB and prefer not to have remanufactured if all possible.

I'm 99 % sure www.spswebpage.com will have a beefier one compatible with all the S-Series cars. www.saturnmotorsports.com will probably have one also and they tend to be cheaper on a good portion of products. They charge you extra for the core and refund it when you return the old one i believe. I dunno if they do remanufactured or they make a total new one, maybe e-mail both companies for that info. If you really wanted to, I hear you can get a custom made alternator from online places for more money of course.

Try to find an automotive electrical specialty shop in your town. We have a place here that specializes in starters and alternators. They can set you up.

I've looked on both websites and neither website has Alternators period. Thanks anyway though! Do y'all have any other suggestions?

Wow, SPS takes away the sway bar, then no Turbo Saturns.net, now no alternator upgrades? Where does the time go? I guess its a sign of the Saturn aftermarket slowly diminishing.

Cat Fuzz has the best advice. Its not uncommon to have an alternator built for your needs. Whether there are shops in your area that can do that or you might have to go online, I dunno.

It says it's for SC/SL but 1.9L which is what my SW1 has. Will it still work? And also what's the benefit of having a high performance starter vs stock/replacement?

there is nothing special about that starter, it is a stock replacement samething you would find at the dealership or part store.

i should note that there are to different types of starters used with the 1.9. a big heavy style was used for the first few years and was then replaced by a smaller gear reduction style. the larger style can be identified by the use of a support bracket on the end of the starter. the smaller style is used to replace a failed larger starter. it is technicly an upgrade but not really worth it unless the unit has failed
