Will P0171/174 affect the state inspection?

My windstar recently got an engine check light and the error code is P0171/174. Iwill try to fix the problem myself but now I need to have the car inspected. Could anyone tell me whether this will cause the state inspection to be failed? Thanks a lot.

This also happened to me around inspection time in New Jersey and yes I failed, but they gave me an extention sticker which gave me time to do the fix. Hope this helps

It all depends on the state and what the inspection is looking at, as 12 oz said i live in ga as well and around atlanta you have to get your vehicle tested for emissions and with a check engine light on the car will not pass the emissions test, however if your state is just wanting to inspect the safety aspect of the vehicle brakes,etc... as long as all of that is ok then you should be fine

If you are able to get the light to reset. Which in most cases it should for around 400 to 600 miles. If this is the first time the light came on with a 171 -174. When the problem becomes worse it will trip faster. But I used a code scanner to reset mine and it passed, before I did the repair few years back..

I live in PA. Each year for the past 3 years I've taken my car in for inspection with the check engine light on ...... they fail it and charge me an extra $ 50-$100 to full around with the emmissions and turn off (reset) the check engine light. The light comes back on within a couple days because of the P171 & P174 problem(s). But I'm happy to say .... not this year. I did the fix and the light has stayed off. It goes in on Monday to be inspected.

Thanks all for your input. Actually, I was trying to change the bolts and gaskets. I first disconnected the negative cable on the battery but found that it's really difficult for me to do the fix. So I reconnected the cable. When I turn on the engine, the check light was gone. I decided to take my chance to have it inspected and it did pass! Now I will have one year to change those parts. LOL

By the way, I am in TX.

That's good luck.

But remember you do not have a whole year to make the repairs. I try to get my autos to pass the emission tests at least 6 mos early ... that way my repair time is not so stressful.

As mentioned, different states have different types of inspections....and processes.
The CEL will normally cause you to fail an emissions inspection.
Here in Wisconsin, on OBDII vehicles (1996 and newer), they connect to the OBDII port.
If the CEL was recently cleared, you will fail as there will be a (I beleive) P1000 code stored in there.....which indicates that the vehicle has not had enough drive cycles to completely test the system.
If this is the case, they will fail you and tell you to come back in a few days, to give the OBDII system enough time to complete it's test cycle.

But, again, it depends on the local testing process.
Emission testing may be required in some parts of a state, and not in others.....it is mandated by the EPA for certain targeted areas.

As mentioned, it is a good idea to avoid waiting until the last minute....as if there are problems, you will have time to address them.

I'm in GA and I my tag expired in September. It's been sitting in my driveway due to a leaky transmission seal. The seals are being replaced now. I just put a new battery in last night, the old one was completely dead for like a month, so there should be NO KAM stored, right? I'm sure the mechanic won't have to drive it much to ensure the tranny is working.

Previously after clearing the codes, I've made it back and forth to work a couple of times before the 0171/0174 codes and SES light come on, a 55 mile one way trip.

I've GOT to pass emissions so I can get my tag.

Might there be a window of opportunity between completing the drive cycles and the lean codes setting where I can pass emissions? Anyone know exactly how far I have to go to get rid of the "Not Ready" code?

BTW, I have not cleared the codes with my scan tool in quite some time.

HELP!
