Transmission Adjustment Shift Cable Yellow Clip, How? Help?

My steering column pointer is between gears so I have to adjust the shift cable.

There is a "clever" yellow adjustment clip on the cable ball end that connects the actual shift lever which is bolted onto the shaft at the neutral safety switch.

The clip has been somewhat abused (the transmission has been R&R'd a few times already) and after looking at it for 5 minutes, I really have no idea what the trick is to adjust it.

I haven't run the van all day and would like to get this done before I have to use it this eveying.

Great, I figured it out (I'll leave this post for others to reference)

Actually, depending on how strong your hands are, you can do the adjustment without tools.

The tricks is to realize the yellow clip is actually 2 pieces: 1) the inner piece slides in a longitudinal slot of the "main" part (actual part fastened to end of cable) and 2) the outer piece which actually engages the adjustment teeth on the main part.

The outer piece slides TRANVERSELY! As oriented in the van, this transverse direction is towards the front of the van.

When slid all the way, the adjustment teeth are disengaged and you can slide the inner piece wherever you need it. The best way is to put everything in Low and then merely slide the outer piece back which engages the teeth just where you want them.

Its actually a very nice design once you learn how it works!
