Have a look at this thread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=667887

I think you may find, once you get it out, that the blower resistor is blown on one or more taps.

However, speed position 5 should be full voltage, by-passing the resistor entirely, so you may want to check for a loose connector, or burnt wire first.

Come back to the board after you've had a chance to check, and let us know how you make out.

Wherabouts would i look for the loose wire or burnt wire? And the resistors, where would i find them? thanks

Well, if the internet would make it possible, I guess anyone could point you in the right direction. But that not being the case, you will need to take some ownership of finding the wires and tracing them back.

My advice would be to trace all of the wires from the fan motor (located under the kick panel that is attached to the underside of the passenger side dash).

Follow the wires back to the switch and to the resistor mounted in behind the blower motor in a very inconvenient place near the firewall, just to the left and attached to the underside of the heater plenum.

I believe this web page showing the wiring diagram belongs to GregA: http://www.my-chevy-venture.com/blower-motor-resistors.html

ok i am finally getting around to trying and figuring out why my blower fan is not working on high. i checked all the fuses and they are fine. The relay that is in the fuse panel works as well as i switched it with another relay and got the same effect. so i pulled out the resistor pack and i only have 2 resistors on my little board and they both looked fine. i could not find any wires that were burnt off or corraded. so i pulled the resistor pack apart because there is a relay inside of it. when i had the fan on the number 4 setting there was about 8.4 volts running to the fan, when i switched it to number 5 the relay clicked so it was in the close posistion and nothing would happen. does this mean that i have to replace this unit?

The price for a replacement assembly is 44.50 canadian so i just might go ahead and replace it, but i am gonna look some more for some loose wires

What is the voltage reading with the switch in the number 5 position and the relay closed? It should be battery voltage.

If it is lower than the battery or non-existent, you have a bad connection or an open somewhere between the blower motor, relay and the ignition/battery source power. It could indicate that the relay has 'gone south'.

If you are getting increasing variable voltage levels on all other positions (1-4), the resistor pack sounds like it is still working OK.

When you examine the pack there is a two-sided circuit board and what looks like two horse shoe shaped resistors. (I'm doing this from memory, so bear with me)

If there is some scarring or burning of the circuit board material, the pack is going bad.

ok i got it working now. i had to replace the resistor pack. the voltage was reading 0 when the switch was in the number 5 posistion. i new pack was alot better then the old one was so hopefully this never gives me trouble again. It must have been the relay had gone south. thanks for the help

Congrats on getting it working.

My 2002 Montana is doing the identical thing.

Where is the resistor pack located.

I will start by replacing that.

Thanks

Gord

The resistor pack is located on the passenger side underneath the dash. you will have to pull carpet off that is attached to the bottom of the dash and runs to the just above where your floor mats are attached. once this is off you will see your blower motor, if you look behind the blower motor in the little tiny space that is there you will see a rectangular box that has two wires coming out of it that is hooked up to the blower motor and one plug with 5 or 6 wires in it. this is the resistor pack that is more then likely not working. there is three bolts holding it in place. if you remove the one that is in the front and just losen the back 2 you should be able slide it towards the front a little then down. if you need any more help just let me know

oh and i forgot to mention that it is a major pain in the ass to get up in behind the blower motor as there is very little room to work up there

I think that is the unwritten law of car repair...

Thanks for the info.

Glad I found this post, looks like my problem on a 2002 Venture as well except doesn't work on setting #2.

yes i believe this is the same problem except one of the resistors will be burnt out on your pack.

Do I need to remove the blower motor to change the resistor?

sirjonas

no there should be just enough room to get in behind the blower motor. remove the one bolt that is in the front and loosen the back two and you should be able to slide it forward and out.

I did the job today. Tough!! Took me two hours to completely dissasemble and put back together. I removed the blower motor as that made it much easier for me. Same size bolt as the resistor pack. The last bolt-which you cannot see and have to do by feel is difficult but not impossible. Uncomfortable position for doing this job-Ouch! Make sure you have a small socket set as you will not be able to get a wrench on the back bolt. Everything works fine now!! Thanks!!

I've got an '01 Montana and it's doing a similar thing with the rear heat, I have no high (#3) setting. It doesn't matter if I try and use the rear dial or the front one that controls the rear. If I switch the power over to the rear dial using the front controls, I hear a little "pop" coming from the back controls. Any ideas?
