I am looking to put a sub in my car. I don't know what brands of subs and amps are good and what ones are bad. I was wondering if anyone knew what brand(s) would be good for a decent quality system. I was looking in the range of 400-600 watts and either two 10's or one 12. I also don't want to spend over 400 bucks. Also, which is better, a bandpass box or a sealed box? If someone could help me out i'd really appreciate it.

I would recommend the diamond cm3 line.

there's a lot of good brands out there, kicker, JL audio, mtx, rockford fosgate, etc. You could definately find something for under $400 that would make you happy. Good amp 200, nice sub 125, that's only 325. About the box, the bandpass box will be louder, but the sealed box will have a little bit better sound quality. I don't think you'd even notice the difference in sound quality much at all, so I'd recommend a bandpass box for you, it would be much boomier. :)

are u spending up to 400$ on just the subs, or subs and amp???
and with the boxes, the bandpass is louder, but the bandpass is loud ina very narrow frequency range, which will make every bass note sound the same. ALso bandpasses color distortion, so you cant hear when your subs are being over driven. Unless you want an "overal" louder box, or want to hear everything sound the same, get a sealed box

If you are building your own box then I recommend a simple sealed enclosure as there is a lot less you can fuck up.

hmmm
well if u want it to just bne really loud at certain frrrrequencies, then use a ported, call the comopany and ask them.
it all depends on what you want...

what kind of car do you have?
if its a hatchback i would definatly recommend a seald box. if no openings to the trunk then i would recommend a bandpass.
JL's in my opinion are the best subs, especially for the money

Ported (often) = LESS low bass ... the reason is that the speaker is unloaded below the tuning freq, which is usually around 35 Hz
to change your profile ... look at the top ofthe screen ... there is a link called "profile"
"but the bandpass is loud ina very narrow frequency range, which will make every bass note sound the same" .... not exactly correct - if the box is poorly made, it will greatly amplify a small band of bass frequencies, making it SOUND like your music has only that narrow band. It can't actually change the frequencies of the recorded music. It's commonly referred to as a "johnny-one-note" box
With all the bargains out there, you should certainly be able to find a good bass setup for $400.

yes a prtoed box will lose volume below the tuning frequency
but when i say more low bass, im talking about bass between 30-45 hertz
which is where boxes are always tuned to when ported, so witha ported you will be louder.
if you tune it to 40 hertz, the sealed will start being louder around high 20s maybe 28 hertz

Not only loose output, it will damage the sub.

the only way you'll damage the subwoofer is to play the frequencies below the tuning freq. a subsonic filter should help out.

a subsonic filter will cut the low bass even more ....... but a ported (or bandpass) box will be much louder in area just above the cut-off. It's the same old problem, there is NO free lunch.

Easy fix for that problem. Port the box to 20 hz. Since there is very little music that plays below that freq then you would be fine. Just make sure that your woofers fs is that low or lower or else you risk damaging the woofer.
And put it in a large box. It helps smooth out the hump (which is true for any box type)

easy if you are willing to use pretty much your whole trunk for a sub box .... most people don't want to do that

well, you do get a fair amount of cabin gain in a small car - about the only free lunch you will ever get in the world of physics.
