WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

After the trials and tribulations of my Gulf Porsche this one is going to be nice and simple. I always did like this car ever since I saw Sainz flying through Dalby Forest during the GB Rally of '91.
The kit is based on the road version of the Celica from Tamiya with the Studio 27 transkit. This time I WILL NOT BE OPENING ANY DOORS WHATSOEVER!!!!!
So off we go again...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03366.jpg
This is a hefty transkit consisting of white metal, decals, etch and resin parts as you can see...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03367.jpg
There is a fair bit of alteration needed on the shell and this is how it looks out of the box...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03368.jpg
The sills, front bumper, mud flaps, rear number plate all need removing and two holes need putting into the roof along with a new fuel flap.
first up and off with the front bumper...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03372.jpg
and on with the new one, hasegawa's photo etch saw used for this...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03373.jpg
then these sills need to be removed...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03370.jpg
and the number plate too...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03371.jpg
as for the floor plan then the floor is completely covered with a white metal piece and these four pins need to come out...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03374.jpg
to look like this
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03375.jpg
this is probably going to be the heaviest 'plastic' kit I've ever built.

I'll be watching this build up for tips as I have the same model sat in my loft.Nice start on removing the bumper and other bits.I'd thought about spraying the red sections instead of using the decals for a better finish. What's your thoughts on this Sean?

Looking forward to following along on this.
Painting the red sounds like a good idea.

Hello Sean, and all,
Wow this will be the WIP to follow in the next weeks !
I have this kit/TK too (not surprised ? :grinno: ) and will enjoy to see how you lead this build.
I also ever thought to paint the red instead of using decals.
I will love to see one of your awesome build this time about a car I know ! :naughty:

thanks guys,
really undecided about the decals or paint problem. If it was just plain red and white I would definately spray however there is a very thin almost pin stripe black line around the red which will be too small to trim off and place on the car seperately... I would prefer to spray but not sure how I would get the black line on neatly enough if I do.

more progress...
removed the old number plate and surround...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03469.jpg
and added the new white metal one...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03471.jpg
new metal sills on...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03470.jpg
for the roof vents two holes were needed in the roof, I measured these out using the etch pieces as templates
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03473.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03472.jpg
and for a little extra detail I added a little mesh underneath the opening first...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03475.jpg
one done...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03476.jpg
and them both in place...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03477.jpg
the jury is still out on whether or not to spray the red, anyone any suggestions - yes the finish would be far superior spraying it, but what about that pesky little black pin stripe around the edge?

I LOVE that roof vent detail!!
Your adding the netting is a great added touch
I can see a mold line over the drivers door/roof? I am sure you know it but just in case.... (Lesson learned from Gio ;))
You could also mask the black pinstipe? or even cut it from the decal and use just the pinstripe as a decal? Just thinking out loud :)

This looks like it will turn out as good as that gorgeous 917!! Looking forward to watching this one taking shape! :grinyes:
As to the black stripe problem, Hannants stock various widths of stripes done by Microscale, eg 1/64th inch wide;
http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=MSPS1642
or 1/32;
http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=MSPS1322
If you go to their homepage, select Microscale in the drop down Manufacturers search box & put 'stripes black' in the keyword search field it'll show all the available thicknesses.
Alternatively, you could get a sheet of clear decal & draw the black stripe on with a permananet OHP pen & a ruler & apply like a normal decal?

I was also going to suggest the Microscale stripes from Hannants.I've used them before on aircraft models and they are very good. The vents look really good and the netting below them is a nice addition.

Yummy, I am really looking forward to this build. I too remember Sainz in this car---although I never saw him drive it (my first RAC was 98)---and how very cool it was. A few years later a friend of mine bought the next generation Celica (T180) real car and I was horrified how ugly it was... although that has now grown on me too.

Hi guys,
I've been working away in deepest darkest Germany for over 2 months but Im finally home again. Thanks for all your comments and following this build, I will be updating again over the next couple of days.
What have I missed? Im sure there will have been a whole bunch of outstanding builds - Dave and Steve you must have built at least 10 models while I've been away the speed you guys build! :-)

OK,
progress since I've got back...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03651.jpg
added a few of the detail to the floor plan such as the rear anti-roll bar and compartments that sit behind the seats, also added the etched seat mounts and painted the top of the rear suspension struts and alu & gold with a little thinned black for weathering.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03652.jpg
as for the under side, I decided there is little point taking any time on the engine as it will be completely covered by the white metal protection plate to this is as detailed as its going to get. There is no suspension mouldings in the kit and I again decided not scratch any as the amount of time and reworking it would take is not worth it me thinks
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03653.jpg
the heat protection is made from alu tape pressed onto an small file to give it the textured look. The weathering & heat staining on the exhaust was done using Tamiya's weathering kits plus a little blue and red dry brushing.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03654.jpg
The roll cage went together very well however I soldered this just to give it a little extra strength, this was then sprayed and the padding picked out in matt grey, more weathering added using washes of black and dry brushing with white.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03655.jpg
Wheels are pretty straightforward, a little clean up and then a coat of 'Racing White' all decals went on a dream and I added the usual wash of black for weathering. I will pick out the bolts in alu and then give the tyres a coat of matt - job done! I have chosen not to add the vents which this car ran on the tarmac stages as I think they look plain ugly!
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03659.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03660.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03661.jpg
finally the bodyshell is finished, the pics make it look a little matt however the finish is really nice, I will take a pic in daylight tomorrow which should improve it somewhat. Masking was extremely time consuming and took up almost a whole roll of Tamiya tape itself, however Im glad its done and out of the way and it all looks pretty neat and tidy.
more to come tomorrow fngers crossed... oh its good to be back!

Some more shots of the shell, for the red areas I decided to try the decals to see how well they fit first, I wasnt hopefull but I thought I would give it a go and if they werent any good I could always remove them and spray it intead.

I have been really suprised how well they have gone down and even more so how well they fit, I did use plenty of microsol but they fitted so well that I decided to go ahead and add the rest, there are a couple of areas around the rear number plate that will need a little touch up but otherwise they are just about perfect if I say so myself - hats off to cartograph & Studio 27.

more progress,
as there is very little to do on this build in terms of engine & chassis detail I wanted to have a little fun with the interior, however it has proved almost impossible to find any decent interior shots of the car so some of the details are going to have be 'artist impressions' as they say!!!! :licka:
further details added including fire extinguishers & plumbing, etched foot rests, front radiator and fan, rear fuel tank and the spare wheel with belt fastners.

seems silly even having the radiator in the kit as it can hardly be seen at all but hey, at least I know its there!!! Just working on my favourite part at the mo - the dashboard!
more later today.

yeah no problem its .6mm Modelers Mesh Hose, HLJ and Media Mix still sell it.
last update of the day (probably!)
I've added more details to the interior, extra cables down each side fastened down with thin strips of alu foil, + & - leads for the battery and a little extra detail for the top of the fuel tank (those of you with a Tamiya Williams FW07 will recognise it!!)
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03671.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03672.jpg
Also couldnt resist adding the majority of the sponsor decals on the shell. Not the best ever looking car in terms of livery but it still looks quite nice. All the decals went down without any problems whatsoever.

Still working on the dash and seats too, Im gonna use a technique that I learned from one of the guys on here with the seats and use some embossing powder to replicate the material, this is a first for me and fingers crossed and I dont balls it up!
see you in a while.

its called aluminium tape, I buy it from Halfords in the UK which is an autoparts store. Its quite expensive but one or two rolls should last a life time of model making. To achieve the texture I rubbed it flat over a file. Hope that helps!

OK, more progress...
I added the sump gaurd which is again white metal and adds even more weight to what is already a hefty model. It is almost as heavy as a diecast now! The was sprayed red and then I dragged a file across the raised areas to achieve the damage and worn look. I added a little further weathering once this was all dry.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03676.jpg
and so onto the seats...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Toyota%20Celica%20GT4/DSC03677.jpg
I think Im happy with the result, this is the first time I have used this technique, I used some embossing powder over the top of some wet matt black which leaves this finish. It is a little messy and Im not 100% convinced however I think it looks a lot better than just spraying seats and adds a little further interest in the cockpit.
the seats were then added onto the chassis and I for the seat belts I used the S27 hardware and material supplied. Once the roll bar is in and fastened down I can add the remaining belts.

a couple of etched catches and fastners added to the shell along with indicator lenses and healdights, rear number plate, petrol cap and rear hatch fasteners. Toyota's of that era had a smoke effect over the lenses of the lights and this was achieved on mine using Tamiya's Smoke colour funnily enough!

The foil from inside a cigarette packet is also a very viable option (I recommend Gitanes sans filtres if you can get them).
Also Model Factory Hiro sell a self adhesive, patterned foil expressly for making heat shielding. Look for it on www.hiroboy.com
