Look, I'm not "dissing on" hondas, and I'm not flaming people. A honda civic is an entry level car, just the same as a focus, or neon, or a protege. Just because some people have put serious money into making their hondas fast, does not mean that a showroom stock civic is a fast car. Don't expect me to regard a civic as a fast car, unless I see it run or see whats under the hood.
If you want to put money into your car, and take it in any direction you like, be it a drag racer, autoXer, rally racer or even a bonneville car that's fine, it doesn't bother me, it's not my business. However, if you rice out your car and parade it around proudly, I'll be amused. There is not one fast civic in my town, at least not one I've seen run. There was one guy running around with a body kit, altezzas, colour coded interior, and at least 400 watts of subwoofer. He claimed to have a twin turbo jdm engine under the hood. I called him on it, and it all looked pretty stock, save for a set of colour co-ordinated plug wires and a K&N air filter. Oh wait, the airfilter had a tube attached to it, I guess that makes it an intake :P Rice, it's what I deal with in town. If I lined up against hybridsols car, he would waste me, no problem. Just from the pics there, I can see he's swapped the engine, and built it with a turbo, and intercooler.
Thats a fast honda, unlike the ricey civics that drive around the valley.

The same reason that made the Honda accessible to the real tuners(parts and vehicle price and availability), make it available to the idiots who consider a windshield banner a modification. This isn't mine, or any other real enthusiast's fault. Just like the gaudy '93 BMW I saw with big-ass combat wings and Japanese stickers on it. It wasn't the car's fault, it's the owner that needs to be shot.
I call myself an enthusiast yes, although a lot of you who drive "real sports cars" probably wouldn't.
I learned how to drive stick when I was about seven or eight using blocks on the pedals of my mom's old '75 bug with the four-speed. Her workers(she owned a business) thought it would be kinda cool and funny to see how I did. I did alright.
I started appreciating cars watching my stepdad work on his '73 Olds Cutlass with a HUGE-block motor (583, I think). It was loud and it was fast.
I lusted for a 5.0 Mustang in high-school, until I saw a stock-looking '92 GS-R beat one(not by much) at local street-racing event. The irritated look on the 5-oh's owner's face was priceless(I didn't like the guy much because he had the cocky "I am the shit" attitude, especially at the track). I have wanted to re-create that look on every cocky automobile owner's face, import, domestic, 4-cyl, 8-cyl alike. That is what I aim for. Whether I achieve my goal or not is for me to worry about. Whether or not my car is actually fast, is for the other guy to find out when he instigates me, because I won't instigate him. He'll never get a hint from the outside of my car, because aside from my rim/tires that were chosen for performance reasons as much as for looks, the outside is pretty much stock and will NEVER carry any sticker unless I find myself specifically sponsored. I have vowed to not put any kind of body-cladding on my car until I can run 13's or better.
I know the specs of my ultimate cars such as the Mclaren F1, Skyline GT-R, Acura NSX, Ford GT-40 and other performance cars. I read almost seven different car magazines a month just so I can keep up with what's new and what the competition is coming-up with.
I know this is a long rant and rave, but I ask for all of you please quit stereotyping Honda enthusiasts. If you notice, the actual "ricers" rarely ever come to sites such as this. Everybody has their reasons for owning their particular make.
I try not to stereotype domestic owners like when my relatively stock-looking Civic gets cut-off revved-on by an obviously modified Mustang GT? Does that mean that Mustang owners are instigating morons bent on proving their masculinity they don't have? Against a car they know they'll win against? No...it was just a random asshole who would've done the same thing if he had a Camaro or an Eclipse Turbo. Now imagine my car beating his...THIS is what I would love and work towards.
What about the Camaro that HAD to do a quick fly-by on me at about 100-120 because I happened to pass him on CRUISE-CONTROL doing about 85 to his 80? Was he a ricer? by most of you guys' definitions, no. I do think however, he embodied what is wrong with what you define as "ricers".
Bottomline, regardless of what vehicle or motor, it doesn't make it any easier or less dirty to work on it. I actually found it easier to work on a domestic boat, because they give you so much room to work in/with, and it's so much simpler most of the time.
Is it now Honda's fault that I just saw a completely riced-out Cavalier the other day? The point of that is to say that imports do NOT corner the market on "ricing". Idiots do.
Don't hate, judge or assume...just race. If you win, you win...if you lose, improve...whether your car, your motor or your parts...IS COMPLETELY UP TO YOU.
P.S.
A little light reading of Soichiro Honda's history may enlighten a few folks. For those of you who care to know. (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Track/3688/Honda_History/)

He's spoken the truth fellas. Ricers are the ones who create rice. Rice doesn't happen on its own, and certainly not from Honda or any other company itself. Even companies that offer up ricey-looking cars only do so because there is demand. FROM RICERS!

Well said carrrnutt, it's sad but true. Still you can't dispute that the most commonly riced car is the honda civic, because of it's price, availability, and strange effects it seems to have on ricers.
I don't know what it is, but these people seem to flock to the civic, and elevate it to supercar status. Even the most hardcore honda civic fan will admit that it's an entry level car, and it take serious modifications to make it fast.
A Ford pinto is a slow POS, but if I drop a smallblock V8 in it, it'll run 12s... if I build that V8, it'll run 10s... so what! This does not make the pinto a fast car!
I seriously do not have anything against honda, or people who drive hondas. I just hate the fact that most ricers largely ignore the more upscale hondas in favour of the civic! For god's sake, honda also makes the accord, the prelude, the S2000, all of the acuras! Really people, it's an economy car!

Well, if you look at it from a mechanical standpoint, how far from economy cars are the Mustang and Camaro in their original form? The Camaro was an outgrowth of the Nova and the Mustang was just a dressed up Falcon. In the 70's, the Mustang shared a platform with the Pinto, and then went onto a very madly hacked Fairmont chassis. (Fox-body platform, 1979-1993) Heck. The origin of all hot rodding, the Model T, was an economy car. Bare bones transportation.
I don't understand why Honda Civic's are lauded for their off the shelf performance. The '96 Neon Sport coupe will hand a stock Civic Si Coupe its proverbial ass upon a proverbial platter. But the Civic's availabilty, tolerance for idiotic modifications (nitrous and turbocharging on an aluminum 1.6L engine?) and ease of modification are commendable attributes.
That doesn't mean that I'd trade Layla for one. I'd have to daft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

man carrrnuttt, that is what i have been trieng to say for so long. Well spoken :).
Cbass- People buy hondas for a couple of reasons
1.They are very easy to work on
2.Awesome gas mileage
3.Good supension for stock
4.Reliability
you see its fun to make a slow car fast, its like a challenge. But when you have a v8, it is no challenge at all to mod them and make them go fast.
i beat cavaliers and my car is a "economy car" even though it is an Si. Isnt the cavalier considered a sports car? What about Eclipses? I beat Rs's and Gs's like they were nothing and yet they are a "sports car". You see my "economy engine" is takin on "sport car engines" almost stock. So even though its a "economy car" doesnt mean its slow.
And one more thing, look at the price range for everything from the civic si to the prelude sh. Civics are cheap and hell they are not hard to find parts for them at all.
p.s.
lol, you shouldnt judge cars by what they are called hehe, hell if everybody in the world wanted to say that the mustang cobra is an economy car than hell then people would call it an economy car
and if you made a pinto run 13's in the 1/4 then that pinto would be fast :)

I'd take a new civic over an old mgb, but I'd sell it and buy an older Porsche :D I am king yuppie, I can make a commodity exchange to pay for my Porsche!
True, the original pony cars were based off of economy cars, but that was because the big 3 were cheap, and didn't want to hurt their profits by building a whole new platform. Same reason why they used existing engines, and often existing suspension parts.
Hotrodding economy cars is ancient, because economy cars are light. It goes beyond that with the civic though, it's an image thing. There are countless members on AF (you know who you are :p ) who only have a cold air intake (piece of pipe with a filter on it, painted some fancy colour), and a set of clear corners and altezzas. That's their thing, I'm not knocking them for it, but it's the image.
I personally do not get clear corner lights, or altezzas for that matter.

Lol. I wish. Nah, it's the number they put on it to designate the car during judging at a car show.
It's actually not my car. It's my best friend's. I consider it my baby too though, due to the amount of work I personally put in it. As I type, the car sits in the driveway, because I rent a room from my friend who owns this car.
We were thinking of doing a project just like yours. We found a barely running CRX with a good body for $200. We're not sure though. If it's okay, can you PM me with the buildup you did on your Rex? Give me pricing too, if if you can. If you don't want to divulge anything, it's cool.

I was talking about the sticker arangement up the side and bottom of the window, my friends want to put a count under there hoods. And buy the CRiX its a great investment. Shop around for parts as well, its easy to find ppl selling expensive performance parts for honda's, but in reality PP for honda are one of the cheapest. Buisnesses know they can sell ppl pp for honda's for more expensive than actually worth b/c honda's are such popular cars to modify. But there's ppl out there that are still legit. good luck man. :ylsuper

Did I say "dressed up Falcon" was a bad thing? No. But it is the truth. The 1964 1/2 Mustang was in fact based heavily upon the Ford Falcon platform. Right down to the base straight-six engine and three leaf spring rear suspension. In fact, the rally Falcons that year that won Monte Carlo were Falcons with 289 Mustang goodies bolted-on, because almost everything mechanical was a direct fit.
And Cbass, apparently you've hurt Layla's feelings. Now she requires two shots of ether to get started on cold mornings. She's a sensitive old girl, you know. :( ;)

See, I knew you were a cool guy, Cbass. Though now I'm a little ashamed, since Layla's paint is nowhere near as good as the paint on the three cars you posted.
She sat for approx. 13 years under a tarp here in Northern Ohio. Before that, she was the owner's wife's plaything, even in the snow. Neither one of them knew a damn thing about maintaining old British cars, so the carb is hosed and the valve seats are shot because they didn't use lead additives when fueling her, her wheels have clamp on wheel weights for balancing, (instead of tape weights which don't mar the finish and are more accurate) and for some ungodly reason the owner decided to fill the cowl-fender gap so I can't unbolt the front fenders for restoration. I have to TORCH them off.
Anyway, she's going back in her original Royale Blue, though a friend of mine is trying to convince me that she'd look bitching in the new MG factory colors (graphite metallic with lime green striping).
As for the B-V8's, tons of power, very little weight, (less weight than a Sunbeam Tiger with the same amount of power,) made them scary fast. Who knows, maybe I'll get tired of a 250hp (after the mods I have lined up) 1.8L four and hunt down one of the Rover V-8's. Mustang? What Mustang?

Anyway, she's going back in her original Royale Blue, though a friend of mine is trying to convince me that she'd look bitching in the new MG factory colors (graphite metallic with lime green striping).
As for the B-V8's, tons of power, very little weight, (less weight than a Sunbeam Tiger with the same amount of power,) made them scary fast. Who knows, maybe I'll get tired of a 250hp (after the mods I have lined up) 1.8L four and hunt down one of the Rover V-8's. Mustang? What Mustang?

Poor abused Layla! Why would those awful people want to do that to a fine sports car?
As for the V8 swap, the Ford 5.0 is also a very good swap, as they are cheap, plentifull, EFI, MAF equipped, and there are so many performance parts available :)

Well, she no longer has to fear anything like that. As far as I'm concerned, it'd take death himself to get her out from under my loving care. She's my baby.
But the aluminum 3.5L Rover V-8 is so much lighter and revvier. Plus, it's an engine the car actually was made available with. And, it's a British engine by purchase. (I know it started as a Buick engine) I might not have all the parts availability of the Ford 5.0, but at the same time, I'm going to have an engine that delivers the same sort of performance with a dash of style and character to boot.
I know. I know. It's the perfect replacement for those old rotaries. ;)

Yes, the 3.5 is a gem! I was thinking the 5.0 for the cost and availability... Rover V8s are pretty scarce here on the west coast.

I ran 13's stock and paid less than the cost of a new Si. In a automatic convertible no less. How high is the performance level of an SS or Z28 over a Si, alot. And I have personally seen 2 F-bodys (one a Z28, the other a WS6 T/A) run high 12's stock at Houston Raceway Park.
