I have a 98 Windstar, 3.8. Where is the transmission range sensor located and what happens if I disconnect it and continue driving for a little while? I am having a problem where I can accelerate up to about 35miles an hour and it feels like the van is downshifting and the tach shows the rpms dropping. If I let off of the gas, then the rpms increase and the acceleration feels smooth again. Am I looking in the right direction with the range sensor? Thanks.

Just below the air box ,You have to remove it to get to it.. If u unplug to test it.
Make sure the van is running because it wont start ,do to the fact its the N safety switch as well. But as long as you dont try to pass someone it wont hurt anything.. Make sure the fluid is clean because if the tranny fluid is dirty, it will act up...

I just replaced my transmission range switch or Neutral Safety switch because it threw a PO705 code. Brake fluid from the cruise control switch had leaked all over it. I not sure what it controlled but it was not a difficult job. The hard part was getting the switch off of the shaft. Getting the new one on was worrisome. I didn't want to destroy it. The shaft nut was 13mm and the side ones were 8mm. I did this on a 2000 windstar 3.8L V-6
