The GM service manuals are expensive. Are there any good cheaper substitutions out there? Could someone suggest some good books on general auto repair? Thanks!

Try E Bay for the factory type manuals, also on cd. General repairs, library.

depending on what year/model vehicle, both Chiltons and Haynes have their strengths and weaknesses. If you're looking for general info, either will do. If you're looking for specific in-depth info (like rebuilding transmissions, HVAC troubleshooting, etc...) a factory service manual is your only choice.

I'll agree with the recommendation of eBay. I've purchased factory service manuals for all my vehicles and I don't think I paid more than $30 to $35 for each one . It's pretty much being in the right place a the right time concerning finding one for your specific year and model at a decent price. I waited over 6 months for one manual I was looking for.
