bulb compatibility

Does anyone know how to fit a 194 or more common type bulb in a 2040 socket?? The front lights in between the head lights are the 2040 type (on my '93 sable), and i want to replace with LEDs, but they only make them for 3-digit bulbs.

The 194 bulbs are just slightly bigger than the 2040s... would it be kosher to just file them down to fit? Will i have any wattage or contact problems??
