timing help

I just replaced the water pump and timing belt on my wife's '04 cruiser.(2.4 L)
Everything worked out fine (except for all the specialty tools I had to borrow, and the fact I had to discharge the A/C.) I fully expected to fire it up and have no trouble. When I finally cranked it up it sputtered as if the timing was off. This is puzzling to me since the marks on the camshaft sprockets were lined up when I took them off and when I put them back on. Even after I spun the crankshaft around a couple time to seat the new belt the marks still lined up.
Anybody got any thoughts? Does anyone know the procedure if I did not put enough tension on the belt and it has slipped a tooth??
I'm not sure what to do from here.
any input would be helpful:frown:

your timing marks are off. one of you timing gears is probably out 180 degrees. if you do a compression test you will have no compression which means you valve timing is out. the timing gears have a left and right mark on them and my guess is you swapped positions. that sucks. i know cause it happen'd to me. toivo
