Power Window Motor Replacement

Power window stopped working....one side works....one side does not.
Use DMM, with ignition ON....and verify voltage through door push button switches to the motor in each direction when door button switch is pressed.

On my 1996 windstar (other years may be different)
Driver's (left) side power window is Fuse #34
Passenger (right) side power window is Fuse #40
These are 30 amp Mini fuses in the I/P fuse panel.....by the driver's left foot.

I ordered a new A-1 Cardone unit with the gear unit.
You will need a REVERABLE drill with a 1/2" bit.
You will need a 8mm socket for the bolts.
You will need to splice the motor wires (factory connector does not fit)....don't know if Motorcraft brand has factory plug or not.

I posted pictures of the process in my pictures that the link in my signature will take you to.

Remove interior door panel (also shown elsewhere in my pictures).
The extra flap of brown in my pictures is "Dynamat" sound deadning material that I added.

Unplug motor, and verify that all electrical wires are clear of drilling area.

You will need to drill out 3 holes in the door metal as shown in the pictures.

Remove the 3 bolts that hold the unit in place.

Remove motor and gear unit.....press the motor hold-down strap inward to be able to slide motor out.
I had to remove the motor strap in order for my new unit to fit in place.

I indicate in my picture, how the wires connected in my case.
Red went to Yellow with Red Stripe
Yellow went to Red with Yellow Stripe
Loose fit the wires, and test with door pushbuttons to verify correct operation (ignition must be ON for this).
If you connect the wires backward....the motor will go down when the UP direction is selected.....and Up when the down direction is selected.

Crimp wires securely.....and dress the wires so that they will NOT catch on the window when it comes down past that opening.
I dressed the motor wires so that they are outside the door cavity.....in between the door metal and the interior door panel.

Hey Wiswind

thanks for the info. I had always thought, assumed really that the motor was blind riveted in place. Glad to know that it bolts in/out once you drill out the access holes. I have had trouble with my driver's window motor - the drive sprocket was slipping on the motor drive shaft. On a couple of occasions I used a deep socket to push the sprocket back into place. It would stay for a while and get loose again. The last time, at least two years now, I hammered it back into place and then used a punch to deform the metal where the sprocket and drive shaft meet.

Thanks again for the info/photos
