The info I have is this.........................

If you have an issue with the backup sensors, the dealer can run a scan and tell you which sensor is bad. Removal of the bumper skin is required to replace them.

can you expand on "removal of the bumper skin"? I have a bad sensor (identified by the dealership scan), and the dealership wants a few hundred to replace it. can I do this myself?

You have to remove the rear bumper cover to gain acces to the Parking aid sensors ( that's the name of the device) and remove them. This is what is indicate in my Windstar Ford DVD manual. When the bumper cover will be remove you will be able to remove the defect sensor(s). They are installed
about the same way as a lamp socket and seem to be easy to remove.
