I would probably suggest you take a look at the condition of the T belt and if it looks worn at all, replace it. All the other general maintenace like tranny fluid and coolant flush, replace the fuel filter, maybe the spark plugs and wires if they look worn, etc. Get it running at optimum level, then maybe look at some basic bolt on mods if your wanting a little more power.

Like _eclipse_ said, give the car a general tune up. Plugs (ngk's), wires, fuel and air filters, coolant flush...things like that. Also look into the timing belt. We're supposed to replace ours RELIGIOUSLY at 60-70k miles, and at the 120k mark you're looking at doing the second timing belt job. They're not *hard* to do at all, they just take some patience and knowledge. If you're good with your hands and cars, you should be able to pull it off no problem, just make sure you do some reading first and ask ANY questions you have. A messed up timing belt job could end you up with a bunch of bent valves, or even worse a whole engine that's wrecked. Then check into some general mods like some hard intercooler pipes, manual boost controller, BOV, and an upgraded exhaust.
dsmtuners.com also has a great upgrade path, check it out. http://www.dsmtuners.com/sub.php?page=2gtstage0power

Couldnt have said it better myself. Do a little bit of research and find out what ur goals are for the car. Then do a lot more research. Ive been on here for 9 months or so, and have been helped through every step along the way. From my turbo intake making a whistling sound to what intercooler to buy. Check the upgrade path like GT said, it is basically what i did step after step. I started out with a boost gauge, turbo intake, BOV, MBC and a 3 inch exhaust as my first purchases.

thanks a bunch guys...whats the easy way to just check the t belt? o i was going to get a hyines manual..i know thats not how u spell it. just so i can see how everything comes off...this car has been sitting for about 7 months and its a older fella that im getting it off of. it needs eather the filter or fuel pump and i get to take it for $1300.. the body is in great shape..its going to be a hella upgrade from my little ford escort zx2.....well as far as what path i wanna go with this car for the moment...the car is gonna be my daily driver and im gonna have the zx2 as my back up car...and i know the car as it sits 100% stock and shits and gets as it is but i wanna be sure that no lil honda gets me at a green light...i kinda wanna make it a sleeper. so im not going to do a body kit.. maybe a front bumper just to hide the innercooler if i get/ need one.. i was looking at some of the sites that are in the stickys and are they all good and trustworthy? im not a fab. man so i dont wanna get a lota parts that need to be fabed. overall i would like to see about 250 to 300 hp and as i said im working with about 2 grand or so....thanks again guys

If it were my car, I would replace the timing belt if I didn't know the service history. If you can do the work yourself, the parts will run around $325. Other than that, everyone is correct. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, coolant, oil, trans fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid, etc.
I'm confused by your last post?? In your first post, you stated that the car is a Talon AWD, but in your last post you asked if 98's are AWD???

98 TSI AWD = sexies DSM in production. You're getting a VERY, VERY good deal on one hella sexy car, I only wish I could be that lucky.
For the parts on the timing belt, you can get them pretty much everywhere.
extrememotorsports.com
slowboyracing.com
magnusmotorsports.com
roadraceengineering.com
All of those sites should have the parts that you need, just do some shopping around to find which ones you can get cheaper. Also I suggest going with the balance shaft eliminator kit, it's a fairly simple modification and eliminates the need for that pesty balance shaft belt.

That site doesn't look too bad and their prices don't look that bad, but there's just something about it that bothers me (except for the fact that they can't spell through).
I personally would go with a proven dealer though. Extremepsi.com usually has good prices on parts for our car and I know alot of guys on here have done business with them and have nothing but good things to say.
EDIT: Here, I put a list of things from extremepsi.com together for you. Total cost = 217.49

I would get the fluids at your neighborhood parts store, unless you want something high-end that they don't carry. No sense paying for shipping for something like that.
Anyway, I just picked up all the timing belt components from www.extrememotorsports.com for $325. That includes the timing belt, balancer belt, all three bearings, hydraulic tensioner, water pump, and water pump gasket.
It is highly recommened that you replace everything while you are there. It's only a couple dollars more in parts, and can save you hours and hours of labor later.

ok after i get all that tune up stuff done..i was thinking about starting with somthing small like cold air intake and a short shifter, ive looked and to tell ya the truth i could not find much of any CAI's , and i found a b&M shifter i like..any thing else u guys can think of ?
gthompson97
05-04-2007, 09:34 PM
$30 ebay "short ram" intake and then get a K&N filter for it, an aftermarket short throw, some new shifter bushings, and maybe a nice exhaust, that should get you off to a good start.
20zetechzscort
05-04-2007, 09:49 PM
yeah i was looking at some exhausts ...i was readin some of the threads and i read somthing about a megan 3" (cat back, turbo back?).. i personaly would like to do a full turbo back. just to get rid of the old stuff and make it look better and of corse better profomance :) . but when /if i do that do i need to get a better intake manafold also or does it matter?
gthompson97
05-04-2007, 10:01 PM
A 3" Megan turbo-back would be a good exhaust, and no, you shouldn't need a new manifold, everything should bolt right up to what you have.

ok next question..i have not been able to find one? u know of a sit off hand ?
20zetechzscort

as far as the intake this is about the only thing that i can find in ebay that did not say it was for non turbo http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-96-97-98-Eagle-Talon-TSI-Air-Intake-Adapter-Filter_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33659QQihZ019QQi temZ290111905923QQrdZ1
when i do get the 3" exhaust . what else do i need to get ? down pipe..test pipe (what ever that is lol)

When you do the intake, I would get rid of all the piping from the stock box to the turbo. As for a CAI, you can't get them for a GST / GSX. If you have a short route FMIC you can fab one up yourself, but it's really not worth it. If you are looking for lower intake charge temps, go with a FMIC or methanol injection.
As for the exhaust, the size of the piping is going to be determined by how large of a turbo you want to run. For anything up to a EVO III 16g, 2.5" piping would be fine, but if you plan on going larger, most people say to go with 3". Depending on your states emissions testing, that will dictate weather you go with a test pipe or a high flow cat. I preferred the high flow cat, because I'm not looking for anything loud. Actually, I want it as quiet as stock. A test pipe is going to provide more flow, but it's going to be illegal (in all 50 states) and much louder.
Don't worry about your intake manifold, we can talk about replacing that when you start pushing around 400WHP. :)

Just to get things straight for ya, the Eclipse and Talon are almost the exact same cars, except for a few minor mods (like the taillights and bumpers on the 95-98)
95-99 Eclipse GST is the same as a 95-98 Talon TSI
95-99 Eclipse GSX is the same as a 95-98 Talon TSI AWD
95-99 Eclipse RS/GS is the same as the 95-97 Talon ESI
These 95-98 or 99 cars are also called 2g dsms, because they are the second generation. The 1st gen ones are from 90-94, so if someone says something about your "2g", that's what we're talking about, FYI.
Anytime you order a part for your TSI AWD, the exact same part will fit on the GSX (and some GS-T). All of the 95-98(99) turbo cars have the exact same motor and everything, so if you're ordering an engine part, you could get one for either a FWD turbo or an AWD turbo, the ony time you need to worry about ordering different parts is if it's an "emblem" part (i.e the steering wheels have a Mitsu or Eagle emblem, same with the bumpers).
For right now I wouldn't worry about the turbo, just get it tuned up and get some of the basic mods out of the way and then start worrying about the turbo down the road. You have lots and LOTS of reading to do here, and if you take the time, you'll learn a TON, trust me, each member here has gone through it.
The stock 2g turbo's come with an intercooler, but it's a SMIC (side mount intercooler) versus an FMIC (front mount). As for how they work, they basically work like a radiator but for your intake air.
Here's a little better explanation of how intercoolers and turbos work and what not, it's a really good site and if you have ANY questions abouthow things work on cars, this would be a good place to look it up.

gthompson97
05-07-2007, 12:42 AM
Yeah, if I were you when you're installing it, get everything finished up and then let the motor sit overnight (don't put anything back on yet, or if you have other mods (tune-ups) to do, do them now so the timing belt can sit for a few hours) and then check the timing again just to make sure the belt hasn't stretched or anything, because it does happen every once in awhile. Then turn the motor over 2 revolutions (IIRC) and make sure the marks still line up perfectly. If so, proceed to put everything back together and enjoy a newly-tuned car.

Megan racing makes some great exhausts, otherwise you could go to a local shop and have them mandrel bend a custom exhaust and you could just get a muffler, or find a used one one ebay. I have an Apexi N1 on my Talon and it sounds awesome. Not high pitched or raspy at all, it's a nice low growl.
For the strut braces, ebay ones should work just fine.

welcome to the dsm forums for eclipse talon and lasers
there is a audi forum aswell also this thread has nothing to do with what you are looking for so please don't try and hijack it. If i were you I would go to the audi forum do a search for bolt on mods and then if nothing make a new thread with something similar to what you wrote for us but maybe with a little more information. If you want a complete shot in the dark since i know nothing about audi's im just gonna go ahead and guess intake and exhaust are good places to start.

We can tell........
Sell the Audi, buy an Eclipse or Talon, and then come back asking questions.
