96 SL1 making noise when stopped?

a friend of mine has a 1996 Saturn SL1 1.9L Automatic. when he comes to a stop ir reverses the car makes a loud rattling sound, but when he takes off the car sounds fine? anyone know what it could be? any help would be appreciated thanks

Does it rattle coming to a stop or when the car is completely stopped?

If it rattles coming to a stop, then I have a noise similar to that which is due to a worn strut on the passengers side. You can hear it rattle a lot anywhere from 1mph to 35mphish (and usually reverse). He might want to check the struts if he hasn't already.

sorry my keyboard sticks.. the car rattles real bad when you stop at a light. This happens when the car is in drive, but when its in park it seems to be fine. Something transmission related perhaps?

Take a look at the top engine motor mount on the passenger side of the engine. If you can fit your "pinkie" finger in between the rubber and the metal "U" brace.. it is likely the problem... get the lifetime warranty Pioneer mount from Advance Auto..$60 . it is easy to change out...

hmm either of the two "struts or motor mount" sounds reasonable, the car does have 154,000 miles on it. If not those two anybody else have any bright ideas?
