Hi
I think most would be looking at replacing it. You might do a search of the forum as several posts over the years have dealt with the VSS. The biggest problem is just getting to it. You must come up from underneath on the right rear of the transmission near the right output shaft as I recall. It is buried up in there. However, I think other than out of easy reach, it is a bolt in/out operation.
Here is what you are looking for: Rockauto.com has 4 for between $16-$20.

Are you having other issues - speedometer inop or inaccurate, shifting issues etc?

I replaced the VSS on my windstar recently and it is hard to get to. I had to take off the cowl and intake and remove the exhaust manifold. You can reach it from the top with the cowl and intake removed. It is one 10mm bolt that holds it in place. took about 4hrs. I replaced it and the new one still has not fixed the problem for me. The people at autozone said it takes about 100 miles for the computer to reset but it still hasn't for me. Does anybody have any sugestions or ideas?

Yea I was sitting in traffic and the transmission started acting funny.I thought it was gone. Then another day the speedometer stopped working for a while. So does anybody have a picture or a link to where the sensor is located?
