I have a 96 TSI turbo motor, and Im installing it into my 1990 Eclipse, I need to known what all mods to the 1990 I will need to do to make the motor fit. Iv read somewhere else that it has been done a few times, but I cant find the link.
I have the motor and intercooler, motor harness, cabin harness, cluster, all fuse relays all relays ecu. I have everything I need for the install. I just need to no what needs done to the 1990 to make it work. Its an auto tranny by the way.
The 1990 is a 1.8l non turbo, and the motor is about shot. I no everyone will say its not worth it, but I want sumtin diff, and I want to do this. The motor is not AWD, so thats easier.

You've been around long enough to know to use the subforums.
And you're right about one thing, we're going to tell you its a pointless swap. First off, I dont think the 1.8 and 2.0 mounts are even remotely close so you are going to need to do quite a bit of fabrication to get it in there at all. Second, once you get it in there you will have a 7 bolt, a ghetto rigged on at that. Then you are going to have to worry about crank walk blah blah blah. Completely not worth your time and/or money at all IMO.
To answer your question, I doubt this has ever been done mainly because there is no point for it to have ever happened. If you really want to do it you are pretty much blazing your own path.

I thought I did use the sub forum, anyways I no Im going to need to fab parts and monts, I was just woundering if anyone has done it before. I can swear Iv seen it before. And what you mean "crank walk"?
Im not good with those terms, lol, and when I do go to do this, Im taking it to my friends cuzin garage he has welders, pimp benders, lifts. All the tools we will need to do this. I no I need a custom exhaust, custom motor mounts, tranny mounts. I no I need work, put I dont really understand what the diff is from a 6 bolt or 7 bolt, whats the diff? And why dose it matter so much?

Ok, check out my project thread and refer to the pics on the last 2 or 3 pics and you will see 6 and 7 bolt differences... I'm sure I have posted up some info you could use kinda for a project like this... Maybe... lol

It gives some, but I dont really see the diff, its a motor, it runs and I got it for dirt cheap. So Im going to do the install, and best part is I have 3 dsms for parts, ones a 93 ES Talon with a 2.0 no turbo, auto tranny, one is a 96 TSI Talon (the car the motor came out of) and a 92 Talon ES 5 speed. So I can cut motor mounts out and other stuff I will need from one of those cars.
It might take me some time, but I will do my best to keep everyone updated, and take lots of pics and be very detailed as I can. Im thinking about startin it this weekend, but Im not sure, I'll keep everyone up todate, and IF anyone has any helpful info on this swap, let me known.

Well I know its a motor, but there are suttle (sp?) differences that will screw you in the end if you don't examine it all closely first... Why not put it in the 93? It would be easier than the 92 that had the 1.8 in it.

Its the 1990 I want to install the motor into, and for the 93 its junk it was wrecked. And the 1990 was the very first car me and my wife got when we got together so where fixing it up.
And what is crankwalk mean?
*EDIT*
Found this with the search tool. lol
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t47936.html
It says crank walk is rare even in this model motor, I was planing on replacing the timing belt and oil pump and stuff on the motor before I put it in, seeing as how I dont no how it was driven before hand, (got the motor at a junk yard, but started it and tested it before I got it, and it is a good motor). So wont me replacing those parts on the motor help prevent "crankwalk"?

Ok, look at just the large number of owners on AF who have experienced crankwalk... Its gonna happen eventually with nearly all 7 bolts... The one guy just rebuilt his and only got 600 miles before it walked again...
As for what crankwalk is...

You'll understand once you read it... Its nothing to mess with IMO... 6 bolts FTW...

 Yeah, people can talk all sorts of shit about how CW is rare. Of the few regulars here with 7 bolts it seems all but like two have CW'd one.
Either way man, IMO this is such a rediculous swap. If you want a turbo car just go buy one. Turbo FWD 1g's are cheap as shit anyway. Sentimental value is worth nothing if you fuck it up worse than it already is and I have a feeling thats what is going to happen here.

From what that post says, even tho crank walk is "common" if I catch it before it "walk" and replace the crankshaft and bears then it will prevent it from walking, since the 96 turbo motor is about the same as the 6 bolt. Then couldnt I take the crankshaft out of a 6 bolt and replace it in the 7 bolt. Wouldnt that help prevent crankwalk even more?
*EDIT*
After reading even more, I found that in the 95-96 models Turbo models to be excate. All had a bad run of crankshafts, they where machined just slighty out of spec. So if I replace it with a new crankshaft or one that was machined right, then that will prevent the crankwalk. And as far as I no when I bought the motor, there wasnt ANY weird noise from under the hood.
So from what I read and understand, like I said if I replace the crankshaft with a new one, or better machined one, then that will prevent the crankwalk. And like I said, I was planning on replacing the timing belt, oil pump, and few other parts before I install it, so I will replace the crankshaft and the bearings while Im there.

Not sure if I'm considered a regular again, but mine hasn't walked.....yet. :grinyes:
The sad thing is, that my best friend's 2g GST walked. He ended up having Extreme Motorsports rebuild the shortblock.
Oh, and look....another one of my favorite threads. :disappoin

Ya know what... Go for it... Cause nobody has actually solved crankwalk yet. Theres too many theorys behind it, but if you think you can actually beat it then by all means go for it... I'm done with this thread...

Honestly man I too think you are probably wasting your time...I am the one who had my car crankwalk after a fresh rebuild...only 600 miles. I had replaced everything too and had the crankshaft completely balanced and everything and it still happened....If the motor is going to walk its going to happen...I dont think you can really stop it. Everyone has a differant theory on the situation. Some say its bad crankshafts, some say its bad oil squirters, some say they are bad blocks..no one has a definite answer. You are more than welcome to give it a shot but I would hate so see someone put a whole lot of effort and money into something like I did and just have it all go right down the pisser...I agree with everyone else here. If you want a turbo car then your best bet would be to pick up another 1G Turbo because they are so cheap now....but whatever it is you decide to do...Good luck...

No, you cannot just throw in a 6 bolt crank, the crank journals are different diameters. If you are that willing to spend the money in an attempt to make the 7 bolt crankwalk proof, why will you not just junk the junk 1.8, sell off the 7 bolt, and buy a damn turbo 1g??? No offense man, but it is clear to me you lack the knowledge necessary to perform this swap and I wouldnt encourage you to attempt it with out a GREAT deal of reading and research. Seriously, a rebuild like that with a new or remanned crank is going to be a grand minimum if you assembled it yourself, a lot more if you had it assembled. If you took that $1000, sold the 1.8 for even $500, and got rid of the 7 bolt for like $300 you would have more than a solid base for getting a decent, already turbo car that isnt going to be ghetto rigged to hell and back. I'm telling you man, this isnt even a money saving deal, you will have a less reliable jerry rigged DSM that is going to cost far more than an already turbo DSM. I guess its your shit, but in my honest and strong opinion this is not a good idea.

I was looking around more, and found the 2.3 stroker kit, Im not saying Im going to go out and buy that and install that in my motor then put that in. But do those also have crank walk? And what about newer model turbo motors? Like the 98's or 99's? Did they have crank walk also? I owend a 99 GS for over 2 yrs and never had any problems with it. But is it only the turbo motors?
And I might not have the knowledge to install the motor or do the swap. But Im taking it to my friends cuz's grauge and where installin it there, hes been in bussniess for years. And hes done a few restores to older cars. So he has the tools and knowledge to install the motor.
