After following the excellent build recently by fellow forum member "Davesans" I decided my next project would be the Benetton B192.I've started work on the engine so far and thought I would share a few progress pictures with you all.
I'm undecided at the moment wheather I am going to do any detailing work, including wiring the engine etc.I really want to keep the build simple and make sure all the panels still fit at the end (unlike my recent McLaren build) I may just add a little wiring to keep it looking busy, though not too much.On the engine I've tried out some of the Alclad paints (aluminium) and also Tamiya enamels (gold, chrome, aluminium) the black areas are Vallejo Satin Air.The green on the side panels is Finishers Brilliant green which sprayed beautifully as always.

That's all for now.I'll post more as I progress further.Of note as well I should have filled the ejector pin marks on the side panels but missed it and it's too late to do them now.The red driveshaft slipped out of place during the photos fixed it now.
Best regards,

After following the excellent build recently by fellow forum member "Davesans" Hi Steve thanks for the flattering words my friend I really appreciate it.
Nice start to the engine looks real clean your airbrush work once again is fantasist. Looking forward to really seeing what the Finisher’s Green paint looks like on the body are you going to use Tamiya Chrome Yellow? It also looks like you dried brush some silver on the oil cooler from what I can see in the picture. Looking forward to your progress what are you using for reference photo’s?

i'll watch this build, and try to resist the urge to add a B192 to the pile... you're the reason i've got an MP4/5B on the pile. :p

Hi Dave.
I've got two yellows from Finishers for the yellow.Deep yellow (Camel yellow) and Pure yellow (brighter yellow, like TS 16) I'm going to mix the two together (Probably 50:50 or 40:60) to make the yellow for the body.I'm hoping to end up somewhere near Tamiya Chrome yellow. The only reason I'm doing this is I really like the way those Finishers paints spray and they cover beautifully and leave very little to do in the way of polishing etc.I really wish there was a stockist in the UK to save me having to order them from Japan.
The oil cooler was painted in two types of satin black.Tamiya X18 on the outside and Vallejo Model Air black on the grill portion.I didn't do any dry brushing on it.I've got some reference pictures from the Gurney Flap website which I've been using so far and a few general shots from the internet.
When you built your's Dave did you fill the join line at the bottom of the cockpit? Did you have to mask out the cockpit area when you sprayed the yellow and green on the outside of the monocoque? Did you fit the seat before or after the main painting? These are a few of the areas that are puzzling me at the moment.

When you built your's Dave did you fill the join line at the bottom of the cockpit?
No I did not Steve for the very reason that you would have to build the cockpit paint everything and keep out any over spray. I have seen one that was done that way looks very nice but seeing that this was my first model in a long time want to try to keep the difficulty level down
Did you have to mask out the cockpit area when you sprayed the yellow and green on the outside of the monocoque?
No painted after used a wide brush and thinned X-18
Did you fit the seat before or after the main painting?
Both had to do some touch up painting right where the seam was but it was know big deal.
The thing I did forget was the head rest that fits on the monocoque and is also part of the air box fill that joint I had to glue that in then do some more painting of the yellow to fill in the joint you can still see it a little this was after I had put the green on the side.
Hope this helps

Seve,
great start, looks very neat and tidy. Are the suspension struts OOB and just painted - they look extremely neat, couldnt work out if you had cut out the centre section and replaced it with coiled tubing or not.
good job

Great overall work and especially the paint finish!
May I make a suggestion though? I know you told us that it's to late to remove the ejector pin marks, but I still would ask you to reconsider; you will regret it later on if you leave them like this, so noticeable in a model that is so well built aside from them...

good job
Thanks Sean. The struts are OOB.I used a very thin piece of Tamiya masking tape cut with a scalpel and after painting the silver (Alclad) I wrapped the tape around the the inner coils and painted the blue of the spring. After the tape was removed it left quite a neat job.I was very pleased with the result.

Thanks Guy.You may have convinced me to try and rectify the ejector pin marks problem. They do look quite unsightly in the pictures.I may be able to remove the offending part fill and re-paint them, but I did glue the top in quite tight and left it overnight to dry,so we'll see how easy it is to remove it.The suspension should be easy to remove as it is only a press fit anyway with no glue.

Steve.

It's been a while since I last updated.I've been quite busy of late on other things and didn't have much time for modelling,so it took a back seat for a while. To be honest I've not progressed a lot further on the build, but I have made a little progress.I had quite a headache trying to paint the Ford logos onto the engine covers.I tried all sorts of methods, masking, painting by hand, even applying Bare Metal foil, painting black and scraping off the black to reveal the foil. The method I settled on was to spray them black, drybrush the logo's with Citadel colours chainmail silver and then apply a wash of Tamiya X-18 enamel to neaten the area around the logo's.It's still not perfect after 4 attempts but I'm fairly happy with it this time.I'm also going to rectify the ejector pin marks on the two side pieces as well.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/IMGP4585.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/IMGP4587.jpg
I painted 2 of the tyres (fronts) and added the decals. The yellow stripes were a little tricky to fit.I used the Studio 27 ones at first and they seemed a bit too big all over.So I removed them and went with the Tamiya ones instead and they fitted a lot better.Gunze Mr Mark Softer used sparingly helped them to conform without wrinkling and I sealed all the decals with 2 coats of Finishers Auto Clear.I'm not sure yet wheather to use the stencil or decals for the Goodyear logo's on the tyres.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/IMGP4597.jpg
I've also singled out the air intake cover as an area I can improve. So I've removed the moulded in trumpets and am preparing the part to accept turned metal items from Meri Kits. The 2 pieces of white are some styrene rod I added to fill a couple of holes in the plastic. These will be sanded flush later.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/IMGP4592.jpg
These are the Meri Kits turned trumpets.I think they are a big improvement over trying to paint the Tamiya moulded in ones.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/IMGP4598.jpg
I should be able to update more often now I have a little more time on my hands,so until the next update.Best regards.

After cleaning up the part that holds the trumpets I painted it black and added some Crazy Modeler carbon fibre decal into the bottom where the trumpets fit.Once this had dried I glued in the trumpets with 5 min epoxy and added a wash of dark copper to the bottom of the trumpets to give them a little depth. The small black 'rails' that the trumpets fit onto needed modifying by drilling out the holes so the trumpets would fit onto them.Once this was done I super glued the whole trumpet assembly onto the engine, added the valve covers and also the rear brake ducts.Later I may add a small amount of wiring, just to give it that busy look, but without going overboard as I'm trying to keep the build fairly simple.

Finished the seat and installed it into the bottom section of the monocoque.I sprayed the straps red, masked them out with strips of Tamiya tape and then sprayed the seat black.Once I've filled the headrest part that fits into the main cockpit tub to smooth out the join,I will add the seat section and fill the main join line that remains as there isn't a join on the real car.It means I will have to mask the cockpit opening whilst I spray the main body colours or the seat will get oversprayed.Reminds me of my aircraft modelling days all over again!! Here's a couple of cockpit pictures so far.

I started on the monocoque and the first job was to remove the join where the headrest fits.Whilst doing the initial sanding I found it to be very awkward to reach because of the shape (the headrest curves inwards) also the small part shown circled on the picture below was complicating matters being moulded as part of the headrest.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4670.jpg
So to gain better access I removed it with side cutters and a file.Once I have filled the whole thing flush I will remake the part I removed with plastic strip.I have seen some pictures though where this part was not fitted? If anyone has any reference photos and can confirm this I would appreciate it.
Here is the part now awaiting the filler to dry.

I may have got confused a little.I think the picture I saw without the headrest part attached may have been the B193 and not the B192.I'm not sure of the exact race that I am representing.I am using the Studio 27 decal sheet DC629C and building car number 20 of Martin Brundle if that helps.

hi steve,
i would want to build f1 for a change after i've built a lot of motogp models & i think i'll be building this as the first model.
i would like to know, does the kit provide guidance on the 2 colour parts or not?
which the green spray colour should i use for this car?
thanks.

Hi Adrian.
The colour scheme is not so hard because of the way in which the parts break down. The nose is seperate from the monocoque which makes painting it a lot easier. The side pods, rear cowl and front and rear wings are all seperate parts,so this simplifies the painting a great deal I think. There are some good colour pictures on the box art and also some diagrams on the instruction sheet to follow for the painting. But best of all Tamiya actually have moulded a very fine line on the body parts to show you exactly where to mask for the yellow and green colours. You also get decals for the green areas should you want to use them, but I personally feel that painting the green will give a much better result.I am using Finishers paints for my painting.A mix of dark yellow and pure yellow 50:50 for the yellow areas and brilliant green for the green. You can also use Tamiya Chrome yellow and Park green should you wish.Hope this helps.

Just another quick update on the model.I've been working on the nosecone and front wing area. The first job was to correct the nose to wing join.On the real car the front wing supports fit into the wing with no visible join.On the model Tamiya have moulded it in such a way that it leaves a join line between the wing supports.Shown in the picture below with a red circle.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4680.jpg
When this is fitted together it sits where the green circle is and leaves a join.So I trimmed it out with the razor saw and fitted it into the bottom part of the wing.It just needs cleaning up and filling now and the join will be gone.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4682.jpg
The wing supports have been glued to the nose and I am in the process of smoothing them with filler to remove the join lines.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4684.jpg
The whole thing looks better when assembled as there will be no join lines, just like on the real one.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4688.jpg
The headrest is getting there. This is after 2 fillings and primer. It still needs some more refinement to get it into a paintable state.

A very small update.I sprayed the nosecone section with the yellow.I originally was going to mix Finishers pure yellow and Finishers dark yellow 50:50,but this looked too bright/yellow so I tried the dark yellow (Camel yellow) on it's own and this looked a lot better. It matched to the yellow of the Tamiya kit plastic and more or less to the box artwork so I think I'll stick with this colour.
Nosecone with 2 coats of colour
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4702.jpg
When I applied the 2nd coat I layed it on a little too heavy,so to prevent it running I warmed it gently with a hairdryer set to a low heat.It stopped the paint running but also created some very small bubbles where I had filled the wing supports onto the nosecone (just visible in the picture above) Once the paint has dried properly I'm going to sand out the imperfections and apply another couple of coats. One thing I have learnt is yellow is not a very good colour for covering.Any slight change in the primer coats where you have rubbed through slightly or hit the bare plastic when you sanded it back really show up and take a lot of covering over.I'm kind of wishing I'd maybe gone with a basecoat colour from Hiroboy's Zero range of paints as they do cover really well. All in all though it is a really nice yellow. It should look good when it's beside the green.

One thing I have learnt is yellow is not a very good colour for covering.
I began using Tamiya TS paints exclusively, assuming that they would be the best both in terms of colour match and coverage. I just got used to the paint with its shortcomings. I much prefer the coverage I get with automotive paints from Halford's and would recommend it over the Tamiya paints in terms of ease of application, quality of paint job and value for money. Colour matching can be an issue but I just take references into Halfords with me and ignore the funny looks I get :)

Well this is good to know as I have to repaint the yellow on the monocoque of the FW13B do to cracking. I am going to put primer coat down first then shoot the yellow and cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Just a quick update.Progress is a little slow as I've been suffering the flu all week and not felt like doing much at all.The wing modification has turned out ok.It just need a little more filling and smoothing before a coat of primer will be sprayed. The slotted holes where the wing supports fit need a little refining with sandpapers and a file and it will be fine.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4706.jpg
The backside of this part is littered with ejector pin marks so these need filling.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4707.jpg
The front nose section where it had bubbled did not sand out too well. The Finishers yellow didn't want to cover either,so I've stripped the part in question and re-primed it which has fixed the flaws it had.I've decided to change paint and asked Steve at 'Hiroboy' to mix me some Zero yellow basecoat instead of using the Finishers stuff. The Zero basecoat should cover a lot better.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4716.jpg
I've added the bottom of the monocoque to the tub.I should have left the seat out till last though as it's going to complicate the masking a little, but I should manage. The headrest area came out nice in the end after a few sessions filling and smoothing.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4709.jpg
The bottom part was fixed and is now in the process of filling to eliminate the join.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4710.jpg
I also marked the masking line with a row of small pin pricks to use as a guide as they will inevitably get lost whilst the sanding operations are carried out. They should disappear under the final coats of paint. They are just visible in the photo outlined by the black squares.

Small update on the monocoque area. The filling operation took longer than I expected, but turned out really well. Here are a few pictures of the primered monocoque.I masked out the cockpit opening with tissue paper and Tamiya masking tape. There may be a small amount of touching in with a brush and some black at the end, where a little overspray may creep in.

Just another quick update.I'm still preparing all the various parts that will eventually be yellow.
The cowling was a simple job.Just two small marks each side where it was attached to the sprue.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4783.jpg
Various other parts were a quick clean up and straight into primer.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4785.jpg
One small problem occured with the nose. The build up of paint on the front wing supports (1) made the fit very tight into the front wing bottom part (2) I remember fellow forum member Davesans snapping his when fitting it together. So I glued the two parts now to hopefully prevent this.It is not ideal as it will make the painting slightly more difficult. But at least its all the same colour.I should have applied masking tape around the bottom to prevent the paint build up in the first place, but it's glued now.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4789.jpg
Also the holes that accept the mounting pins for the nosecone are a little tight and when the nosecone is pushed onto them it splits the plastic everytime.I chopped off the pins and will mount this another way to prevent this happening.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4791.jpg
The little red circle is where the pins snap the plastic.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4787.jpg
I should hopefully start on applying the yellow soon.See you on the next update.

Quick update before I shoot off to work. Most of the body parts are in various stages of painting. The nose and front wing end plates are in the final colour and drying. The monocoque and engine cover are basecoated as are the rear wing parts. For the painting I have used Zero Chrome yellow from Hiroboy.I used this because it covers really well and I know from doing my Audi Quattro that the Tamiya TS 47 Chrome Yellow does not cover too well.So I basecoated the parts with the Zero yellow and once dry smoothed it off with 8000 Micromesh. This provided the perfect base,a sort of yellow primer if you like. Then I decanted Tamiya TS 47 from the aerosol can and airbrushed 3 coats over the Zero yellow. It glossed up really nicely and was the perfect colour.
Nose assembly finished and engine cover in yellow basecoat.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/stevenoble/Benetton%20B192/IMGP4803.jpg
Once all the yellow is painted I'm going to finish the chassis while it dries and then apply the green areas.See you on the next update.

Steve,
Nice work the paint job looks great was it hard to paint the underside of the front wing with it all together?
It wasn't too hard to paint the wing assembled, but it would have been easier to reach the bottom part had it been in two pieces. The paint went on a little dry in between the two thin wing supports but other than that it's not too bad,it just took a bit of twisting with the airbrush.

Got home from work early so I painted some more of the body parts. The monocoque and engine cover attracted a few dirt particles in the finish so tomorrow I'm going to lightly sand out the imperfections and apply a couple of final finish coats straight from the rattle can before leaving them to dry for a week or so before I apply the green.
