Primer exposes surface flaws, making it easier to see which areas need to be puttied.

Grey primer works best for this though not white as the flaws don't show up.I often primer first,putty,rub down and primer again to check how well the puttying has worked.Sometimes I repeat this procedure numerous times until I'm happy that the surface is as good as it can be prior to painting the finishing coats.
