I'm glad to announce yet another triple WIP - Alex, Steve, and myself decided to build the same kit and by doing this push ourselves to the extremes of modelmaking (yeah, ok) We decided to build Ferrari 166MM Barchetta - the first Ferrari to gain international racing success, first one to win 24 hours of Le Mans, and one of the most beautiful cars of its time. Here is the kit - Model Factory Hiro 166MM in 1/24 scale:

Each of us will make announcements as to the version we will be building. I'm going to build the # 0064 frame with an original two tones livery, in TdF blue and Tourquoise. Me and Steven seen it recently at a show:.

Why? Because if it doesn't work out, I can just commit hara-kiri on that cheese cutter number board on the trunk :D

EDIT: Would this be considered as a WIPle Triple??

Tang> I treid to search, I guess I seen a tutorial ages ago about doing hex bolts: anyway is pretty easy:

mount a metal (may be also plastic..) pipe on a pin wise (obviously with hex. end, if the end is turnable like the Tamy hand drill, fiss it with tape) and start to keep material with a file: round the pin wise 60° and do the same file passes, round again and again and you'll have a hex. pipe, than cut it in the desired width... oki try, easyest do that explain LOL

klutz_100

This is my 1/3 of the 36 cylinders.

I will be slightly modifying the basic MFH kit to turn it into a representation of s/n 0010M which is currently owned by Jon Shirley, the former Chairman of Microsoft and an avid car collector and racer.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/REFS/02.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/REFS/No.jpg

0010 was the sister of 0008M which MFH used as the base for their kit so the changes that I shall be making are more cosmetic than fundamental. The most obvious of them are the extra fog light on the front grille, the distinctive “cheese cutter” number board and different number decals.

Since my build won’t be close to what Gio and Alex will undoubtedly be showing, what I lack in quality I will try and make up for in quantity. Therefore I will be (more or less) simultaneously building a second MFH Lemans kit – the Aston Martin DBR9. This’ll give us all 50 years of Lemans history for half the price LOL

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/2-pack.jpg

A couple of words about the kit which is a beautiful combination of white metal, resin, photo etch and turned aluminium all nicely packed in a little plastic compartment box.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/166MM-kit_01.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/166MM-kit_02.jpg

The quality of the resin casting is super although I have found a couple if tiny air bubbles in very visible places that will be a nuisance to remove. The white metal parts are very detailed but have rough surfaces that need a lot of clean-up. Total parts count for the kit is 382 pieces!

Here’s a little calculation for anyone who says MFH kits are expensive...
166MM: $288 / 382 parts = $0.75 per part
Enzo: $50 / 100 parts = $0.50 per part
So as you can see, Model Factory Hiro kits only cost 25 cents more than a Tamiya kit :D

First thing was an awful lot of prep work on the white metal.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/prepping_01.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/prepping_03.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/frame_02.jpg

Most worryingly there is severe “pitting” on the hood and trunk. I am hoping that primer will smooth cover this but I am not very optimistic.

See you later :)

Hi you "Trio Infernale",

This isn´t a calculating forum - we want to see models   !!!!!!!!!!

I must admit, I prefer modern cars, so THIS 1:1 Ferrari isn´t a real favourite of mine.
Nevertheless it is interesting to see what you make of the kit and what you improve (like Veyron said: improving a 200+ Euro kit seems to be a little bit :screwy: at first sight, but looking at what you have done so far it is worth the effort).

Looks very interesting so far, hope to see more soon

klutz_100

So far the only major issue with bad fitment I have come across is the front grille. The set up uses a p/e “egg crate” grille which is fitted into a white metal surround which in turn is inserted into the front of the resin body. Surprisingly the white metal frame is about 1,5 mm smaller then the hole in the resin body and leaves a very bad gap.

I fixed this by using c/a glue to attach a thin strip of styrene around the part and then sanded everything smooth and flat.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/grille_01.jpg

Right now I think it may be too tight and after painting may not fit so I will paint the surround gloss black and polished aluminum and then test again with the primed body. If necessary, I can slightly sand again to reduce the thickness.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/grille_02.jpg

I used light curing putty to close the locating holes for the second set of windscreens which were not fitted to s/n 0010M. I also used this putty on the white metal hood to close up a locating hole for a driving light which needs to be re-located.

klutz_100

UPDATE 1.2

Moon Mud is truly a fantastic primer/micro-filler and it is a great shame that it is no longer available :(

I couldn’t wait any to start working on this part – the p/e leaf suspension springs :)

Each leaf spring is made up of a set of p/e bars

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/leaf-springs_01.jpg

These are easily removed from the fret and cleaned up with sanding sticks.

I used a toothpick and clamp to align and hold them while I ran thin c/a between the individual strips. When one half was done, I reversed the part in the clamp and glued the other half.

They are finished off with some small p/e bands that fold around the bars.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/leaf-springs_02.jpg

Really great fun to put together and very satisfying :)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/leaf-springs_rear_03.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/klutz100/WIPs/166MM/leaf-springs_front_04.jpg

Main parts of the chassis frame were primed with “Zero” etch primer. The paint guide calls out for semi-gloss black but since I was in “lacquer mode” after using the etch primer, I tried an experiment and sprayed everything with “Zero” Jet Black base coat.

IMO it is an excellent match for semi gloss and what’s more is dry enough to handle in 2 minutes flat! (that’s got to be better than even the best dehydrator! LOL)

I also used the Jet Black as a base for some of the engine parts.

What a Trio!

Great kit!, AWESOME modelers!, what else can we ask for?

Gio:
Beautiful version you choose, I like it a lot, and you said you saw this car in a show; did you get pics to share?
The finish with sandblast looks so real! Which type of equipment is required to do this?
I also think that the bolts on the heads are a little big, but the results combined with some modeling license erase everything else, they look great!
Your job on the steering linkages is awesome!!

Stevensky:
Good start, it is interesting how everyone chooses a different part to begin, I always left the body to the last, and now we just need Alex starting with the interiors to have the car covered from every angle since the very beginning, LOL! But I think he also likes to start with the body.
Good job on the body getting rid of the pitting, but why the hood/trunk lids have different primer shade/tone than the rest of the body? Don’t forget that red color is very sensitive to the color of primer it is applied over.
Nice chassis, I also use black lacquer for these cases, it also resists more handling than any other paint.
I see the driveshaft a little curved, is that correct?

Everybody is waiting for you…

This thread is already in my AF Favorites!!

Hi Ramon

Actually, I leave the body till last too :) I am just priming at the moment to see if my fixes have worked.

Right now everything is different color because of the different types of primers used and the different base materials (resin and white metal) but you are right, don't worry it will all be even and under a white base before I start putting color coats down :)

Again you are right that the driveshaft is a bit bent. I am not 100% sure yet if that is purelya result of my heavy hands  or is it menat to be a little "legged" - test fit will reveal all.... :D

ROFL this mean that we'll have a finished stuff with Alex' interiors LOL!!!

Which type of equipment is required to do this?

Unfortunately the tool (a professional/dentist's sandblast device) R40 used on my stuff is quite expencive: 2-3K euros: I bought a sandblast gun from the hardstore to do some trials, and as agent backing soda, never had time until now. We had a discussion here with Dan and Mark lately around sandblast techs. and tehre's a little Badger sandblaster, dunno know if it needed a big compressor, like the gun or the sand machine. I found another way n my LHS: a sandblast machine (with mini-gun) that work with a vacuum... dunno know if it need a 5000W hoover that suck&eat also your wooden floor LOL
