My girl and I were searching around for cars last night and we came down to 3 cars, a 2000+ Celica GT-S, a 2004 Redline and a FC. She likes all 3 cars, reason why the FC is there is cause we can pay for the car in full, if i sell the jetta and we would pay the least on insurance for it. as for the celica and redline, both cars that we are looking at are going for 11k but the celica is a 2000 and has 68k miles while the redline has 38k. All 3 are manual.
I need some advise so could you guys give me your opinions?

redline all the way, then your girl and musashis girl can go cruizing together. Plus it will prolly beat your RX8 :)

i dont care if it could beat the 8 or not, the 8 is more car than the redline is, FWD isnt as fun anymore. Anyways, I like the redline and celica just like my girl does, i almost bought both of those cars in the past. Wouldve had the redline instead of the jetta, but if i did buy it then i wouldnt have the rx-8 now and my girl wouldnt have a car. But whatever we get both of us will be using, Im just trying to get the goods and bads of both from people who own the cars (or equivellent of it)

I'd say the redline... it's a domestic, so insurance'll prolly be cheaper, as well as the parts for it... it's a pretty kick ass sleeper too.

fc is great, but does she really have the time to wait to let the rotary warm up? or have to move the car for garage space? things like these mean you have to run the rx at least till it warms up and really drive it to avoid the quick start up quick turn off flooding.
edit - are you planning on doing the cooling mods for the fc? just the mods to keep the rotary from overheating? i know that in its stock configuration, heat was a big problem. i cant exactly say what is exactly needed to be done to the fc so keep it from over cooling. if i'm not mistaken, i believe it had to do with the stock exhaust.
i personally would say the celica, or the redling. make her drive each one, and see which one she likes better, for blind spots, how the clutch and shifter throw feels. some cars just are better looking at than to actually drive.
i found that out with the 01 maxima. i liked the features, how it looked, the increase of power, but hated the shifter throw, hated the body roll, hated the blind spot that i got, when driving the sentra i diddnt have.
edit - also the 00-01 celica is in big demand, since of the higher revline than of the other years. that ecu is basically gold to to other celica guys, that ecu also allows you to un 87 octane instead of the 91 with the addition of a knock sensor or something. im sure vip09 could give you all the details on that. check what year it is, basically.

Well As far as insurance goes, i got the redline and celica quoted and the price is exactly the same, down to the penny as i will be paying when I renew my policy as if i were to keep my jetta, so insurance is not an issue.

I'd get the Celica. You get great looks (I HATE the way the Redline looks), great high-revving engine (fun!), 6speed tranny, pretty good gas mileage and Toyota reliability

true it does have good reliability, but no warranty, where as the redline still has 2 years of factory warranty (5 years 100,000 warranty).

I say 2 year warranty. You can get over the looks of the car because after owning it it would start to look alot better to you. When I got my GTP I def. didnt want red and was kinda embarrased when I got it, but after washing it a couple times I now love red.
Redline FTW....I have been trying to get the old lady to look at one in person instead of online because we have sold her car and it wont be long now and she gets something new.
5 year warranty, 100,000 miles and boosted FTW

If you mod it, warranty may be gone.
Also, would you rather have your car get repaired for free, or would you rather not have problems at all?

Why does she need such a hyped up car? Why can't she drive something cheap and normal like a basic 4-door sedan. I mean, does it have to be supercharged?
To be honest Gotian, judging by your past posts and knowing your financial history. I'd say it's best to just suck it up and get a cheap car for her to drive. No reason to finance two cars.

Thing is she doesnt want to get a basic boring 4 door sedan. doesnt have to be supercharged, she told me she wanted something that she would enjoy driving and thats why we came with those 2 cars. as for getting something cheap just to pay off, I did think abou that, thats why i said the previous model celica's cause she loved the one i had, but then after speaking with my dad and musashi it occured to me, if i get one that i can pay off right away it will most likely
1) have a ton of miles on the car talking 100,000+
2) in those 100,000+ miles who knows how much crap the car has taken in.
3) Ive had experiences with cars that had high milage that I didnt put on and that didnt go too well and actually made me spend more money on the car than I bought it for.
The other thing about my financial situation is that it's pretty good and stable, and if i sell the jetta and get a car for 11k I would be paying the same amount, or probably less, monthly than I am paying for the jetta right now. Since i could sell the jetta for 10k or even 9K I would be over what I owe the bank and use that money, plus the income tax money I am getting now(just did my taxes) to put for a bigger down payment on the newer car than when I bought my jetta. (I put 2k down on the jetta and financed 9K and now I owe 7K left after having it for a year.) Financing isnt a problem since I have close relations with my bank. Also another note is that my insurance dropped $1,000 since I turned 21 so that's a huge difference in my monthly bills. (I was paying 590 for insurance now Im going to be paying 250, roughly, for the 2 cars that I have assuming they both have physical damage.) So to me getting rid of the jetta and getting another car of equal value where I will be paying less monthly is a good financial move, when already considering I would be spending less money on insurance rates with no matter what car I get to replace the jetta.
I appreciate your concern about my financials, but I asked for your opinion on which car to get and why you would choose that one, so please give me your opinion cause I would really like the opinion of a former GM guy who also play with japanese cars.

Ehh, I gotta agree with Matt. I mean, I know you love your girl and all, but you two aren't married yet man. You're going off buying her a car and stuff, and she is being picky about it??????!!!!!!!! Ehh, I dunno man. She's a new driver, and gonna most likely smack up the car a little bit. If you were daddy warbucks you could go off and pay for her to drive a viper, but she really doesn't need that, and you don't have the finances to afford it anyways.
Tell her to look for a car within a price range you can afford. You're the one paying for it, not her, or atleast that is how you are making it sound.
Gosh, reading these posts make me wanna stay single J/K :p

Ask yourself the following questions. (Don't post them here, just think about them)
1. Do you have 6 months worth of income saved up in highly liquid form (aka savings account)
2. Are you currently saving at least 20% of your income for retirement and crap?
3. Is your income likely to significantly increase over the next year or two?

You probably don't care what I think. But since I've owned both foreign and domestic I'm going to say my piece anyway. Whether your girl is a good driver or not is not the issue so I'm not going to get on that kick. It's obvious that you both want to share a sweet ride. But I must agree with Matty that getting a supercharged car is probably not necessary. You already have an RX8 which IMO is a pretty badass vehicle and a lot of us wouldn't mind owning one. Of course, if I had one it would be squeaky clean and spend it's nights in a climate controlled garage. Warranties are great but you get the mod-bug and kiss that sweet warranty goodbye. I'm sure a dealership mechanic will easily tell if boost was raised or a pulley was swapped on a supercharged vehicle. I'm not trying to discourage you just trying to add some words of caution. If you can afford it then do it.

you guys are saying I cant afford a 10 or 11 K car, what do you think the jetta is? And I'm paying for it just fine, Im saying I am going to replace a car that is falling apart little by little with another car of the same value where I will be paying a bit less for monthly that isnt falling apart.
You know I asked for your opinions on the cars to get some info, but you guys havent been helpful in that department much. The prices that these cars are is very much in the range we can afford so stop posting about my financials and help me out by giving me info about the cars. Especially before I have to replace something else on the jetta.
And as for her being a new driver, she is an excellent driver and has been driving for quite a while now, she gets plenty of practice driviing manual cause she has to drive 50 miles everyday, and through heavy traffic. I dont doubt her driving ability.
And no, like I said before, it doesnt have to be supercharged, but those 2 cars where the ones at our price range that the seems to like, at least she isnt asking for a new car and neither am I and at least I can feel safe knowing she isnt going to be stranded, cause the jetta has been shutting off after the rough idle recently. That isnt fun when it happens in an intersection. You guys are assuming that im buying a 20K car, no im buying a car and financing less than I did the jetta so my payments will be less. Dont know how many times I need to tell you guys...

I understand your fear of the Jetta. The reason is because I have a 99 Passat with 191k miles (original owner). The driver side mirror is shaky and is going to cause me to have a seizure. We've had our share of vaccum line leaks which have been fixed for a healthy sum of cash for just a piece of plastic tubing. The oil cooler flange leaks when the oil is topped off. My wife is scared to even use the rear windows due to that major fiasco with Jetta windows. BTW, her in-laws had a TDI Jetta and a n/a Jetta and both had issues. Anyway, I can definitely understand your fears of nickeling and diming your VW.

id say the celica, but thats based on styling and because i drove one. i wanted to buy it soooo bad. but someone came in the next day and bought it an hour before i did.
wouldnt the celica be better for autox anyway? i think you and your girl are going to be wanted to autox together, so yea. celica ftw.
celica = clawhammer, chiquae
redline - jayson, rocker, jeep
why must she have a high performance vehicle and shes not your wife yet - stig, turtlecrx, 200ls1z28

Get the FC
Sell the RX-8
Buy and mount a 20B 3 Rotor with a big ole turbo in said FC
Use left over to buy a Civic
Give girl Civic
Get some beer, and chill.
Yes, I am being serious. Gutted FC with LSx or Three Rotor for the win.

I'd get the Celica. You get great looks (I HATE the way the Redline looks), great high-revving engine (fun!), 6speed tranny, pretty good gas mileage and Toyota reliability
You know, I find this really funny since Toyota has had a TON of recalls lately as well as a class action lawsuite becuase of engines that burn up. Reliability my ass, they are NO more relable than any other car.

selling the rx-8 would put me in a huge hole i dont want to be in, cause then I wont have a car and will still owe financing. Which is why I am selling the jetta, no money owed on financing and the car is worth more than I owe. Also I love the rx-8 which is why I bought it.
And no the celica isnt really better for autocrossing than the redline is. And no my girl isnt going to be autocrossing. And it's true what polygon said.
BTW I went to see the redline, it's nice, has the recaro's the competition package minus the boost guage, and everything looks tip top, just needs to be detailed. There is a little scuff on the lip which is why they are selling it for 10K. Im going to my bank in a couple of minutes to see what they say.

For some reason I have this strange feeling you are gonna wind up with the Redline. Like, I'm pretty sure of it. I coulda swore I read a thread a while back that said you ended up getting one...or wait, that was Mush, never mind. Well, I still say go with an FC with a motor swap, but I, much like Mr. Clarkson, love POWAAAAAAA.

you forget this is going to be my girls daily to work, an FC with a 3 rotor is a ver bad Idea for a daily, I dont care much about gas but when youre talking about 12mpg I do. It would be fine for a track car though.

Gotian, you keep saying you'll be fine becasue the Jetta is just as expensive as the other cars your looking at so you really wont be assuming any more debt then what your already in. BUT you missing the big picture which is if you get a cheaper car you'll be freeing up some income and better your situation. why pay just as much when you can pay less?
Okay you know the Redline wassnt our first choice man! I wanted a Mustang GT for her, she wanted the 350Z. we came up short on the money for either due to all the issues we've had so then we said either a used Z or a Mazdaspeed 3 but then the eclipse broke (again!) and we came up short once more. basically we had to keep lowering our standards till we found a car that suited us.
Between the Redline and the Celica you know which one I vote for. And lets stop talking about Toyota like thier engines are bullet proof. The Ecotec in the Redline is 3 time stronger and can take a hell of alot more punishment then the Celica's. Its a solid car, cheaper to mod and has a better crash test rating then the Celica.
It boils down to looks really. The performance is very close in both cars so whcih one looks better to her?
and forget about warranty. I rather pay a mechanic to work on my car then let those idiot dealer pot-heads touch either of my rides, even if its for free. what ever money you save on warranty work you end up paying on cosmetic repairs from all the scratches and dents the dealer guys give ya.

Gotian, you keep saying you'll be fine becasue the Jetta is just as expensive as the other cars your looking at so you really wont be assuming any more debt then what your already in. BUT you missing the big picture which is if you get a cheaper car you'll be freeing up some income and better your situation. why pay just as much when you can pay less?

well we spoke about it when we went to carmax tonight, and yeah maria likes the redline and wants to get it instead of the celica, she said the car felt better to ride in and was more comfortable. Also like i told you, I wen tto my bank and they said everything would be fine and the payments would be less than the jetta, about 30 less a month, which it adds up to alot by the tim eim done.
Tomorrow im doing 3 things:
1) going to my mechanic who specializes in A/C's to see how much it will cost to fix the a/c.
2) Fixing the broken coolant line
3) Going to test the redline that im planning to get with maria so she can drive it this time.

your selling yourself shot man. The Celica you tested was worn to shit! I know the Redline has responsive steering but the Celica is even better when it comes to driver-car interface.
again, let her do the driving. test out the Ion- and then test the Celica.
unless she completely does not like the Celica's look then go for it!
.....can you imagine us cruising round town? the RX-8 out in front followed by two Redlines, the GTO drowing out everyone's noise and the STI picking up the slack. (Junya would be working as usual)
and where would we end up at 1:00 a.m.?

Oh my gosh, talk about an identity crisis. Both Mushashi and Gotian's girls are gonna have the same cars. I hope they are not the same color too.
LOL
This is kinda funny to me. It's all good though. Saturns are stupid easy to work on, so i'm sure it will be a great car to learn how to repair stuff on. It's also pretty quick, especially with the stage 2+ mods.

If the Saturns today are anything like my girlfriends old SR1 or 2 or whatever it was called...
You can take the key from one and use it to unlock and start the other. One of my girlfriends sorrity sisters had the exact same Saturn as she did, and we used the key to my girl's car to unlock and drive around her friend's car.

You could do that with our old Ford work van and my stepdads old Ford Ranger. Both keys were the same shape, and were worn out, you could use one to drive the other.

You know...another car that you could try to find is the Mazda Protege Mazdaspeed edition. Boosted, 4 doors, looks nice and has a great interior. I've seen 2003's go for about $12500-$18000. And that's just roughly around 30K miles to 60K.
And hey, it's a Mazda. So why not. Yeah, the Redline and Celica are two good cars. But I've found that the Mazdaspeed Protege can be a great car as well. Takes pretty good to mods (that is if you ever plan on doing it). Might be a car you want to check out. I've actually taken a good look at them and found that I'm attracted to the car altogether.

BLAH! those Mazdaspeed Protoges are pure crap! my neighbor has one in orange. That slow pos makes a whopping 165 bhp despite a 2.0 liter four turbo. thats like 130 at the wheels. I know I know, "mods can make it go blah blah blah"
yeah but the mods for the MSP are NOT CHEAP!
and a car that demands mods in order to be attractive is not a rip off.
a performance car shoudl be a bang for the buck straight out of the dealer floor.
I used to eat him alive in my 3000GT, I mean he had no chance from a dig, from a roll.......down hill....ect.
forget it Kris, your better off getting another Jetta before you get the MS Protoge!

as someone who has a friend with an ion redline, I would pick the celica over it. Although it is s/c, your gf is prob going to keep it fairly tame, and with that in mind, the celica has it in handling, reliability, and quality of materials.
I havent been in that year celica personally, but the saturn struck me as pretty uncommunicative to the driver, with its only saving grace compared to the celica being the boost and more room. Has she test driven both cars, and if so what are her thoughts?

she didnt want to drive atthat moment and we didnt have too much time, so I drove, she said she liked the redline more though cause it had more room andwas comfortable for her. She also said she liked that the doors swing back like the rx-8. She didnt like the seats in the celica either. She said the celica didnt feel right when she sat in the car.

Have you considered the celica GT? or does it have to be the GT-S?? If you want 4-door, the corolla XRS comes with the 2zz motor in the celica GT-S as well. Besides that, take a look at the v6 camry, camrys are always roomy, and you get the v6, weeeeeeeee......
Polygon, IIRC the latest recall was the Toyota Tundra, there were like 17 accidents and Toyota recalled 500,000 Tundras, too nice IMO. Toyota's reliability is still up there, though, their older cars probably outweigh the newer ones. The thing you have to watch out for in the celica gt-s is the tranny, you'll start grinding if you shift aggressively. I'm sure vip can probably chime in on the goods and the bads. Well, GL GOTIAN!

explain how gotian and musashi are crazy. i want your input, lol. as i know im pretty....high spirited myself lol. basically he wants a coupe for his girl, as it seems. i personally would go with a small sedan, so if you need the room to carry something, you can. i've actually noticed that my 'rear seats' were good for something. but to all his own and his opinions.

Well, just ask her what she wants, and buy it. If those are the three cars she wants, tell her to make a decsion. I mean, c'mon, its your money and her (well, your) car, so don't ask us. I mean, if I had what, 11k to spend? I dunno, maybe a mid ninties Civic and gut it and drop in a B18 and boost it, or maybe something along the lines of a DSM. Thats my opinion.
But, your girl wants a Celi or a Red Line. So, have her test drive both and make the call, simple as that. From what I've read, she wants the Red Line. So, there ya go, she wants the Red Line, get the Red Line.
Thing is she doesnt want to get a basic boring 4 door sedan
Well...regarding this...
I'll tell you the same thing my parrents told me when they said they would help me pay for a car as long as it was a safe, four door, boring car. I wanted the Supra they had on the lot, they wanted me to get the Rav4.
"When you are paying with 100% your own money, you can get whatever the hell you want."
You said you wanted our opinion and advice, well, thats mine. Get the Red Line or the Celica, whichever one she likes better. Or, tell her to spend her own money.

Okay, so the RX-8 is going to be your main daily and you're looking for a car for your girl but that you can drive too.
I'd rule out the FC just because it doesnt really fit with what you want I think, a peppy livable daily driver with some comfort. It'd be pretty hard to find a good one to DD without putting more money into it.
If she doesnt like the way the Celica feels, how about a Acura RSX. My friend has a base model automatic and its pretty comfortable and a nice ride. Decently peppy when using the tip-tronic or whatever its called, even better with the manual.
I'm sure you could find a base model, 2003 with around 60k miles under your price range, even a type S with a little more miles for like 13K with a little searching.

I'm sure you could find a base model, 2003 with around 60k miles under your price range, even a type S with a little more miles for like 13K with a little searching.

well, honestly, get something that you both can actually use. i know thats what you're doing. but, what i mean is what would the car be for in say 2 years, provided all goes well between the both of you?
is it grocery's or just a fun car to drive for work commute and possibly aftermarket?
thats the real question.
---edit, large edit---
actually, i just read this whole thread over again. you said that the car for her is used for:
A) daily commute for work
B) reliable enough that she isnt stuck on the side of the road
C) coupe(from your car choices)
sounds to me that she is picky. seriously, do a full autotrader search for cars in the 0-13k range with manual trans under 100k. that should help ya a bunch. have her see cars, and test some out. pick a large list and show her pics of all the cars. make the list to about 5-6 that she likes looking at, and dont tell her the price tag on them either. see them in person, and eventually you'll know what car you want to buy.
just saying celica vs redline, isn't going to go very far without discussions on here that might seem like arguements.(all honesty here). best for buck, aftermarket, more reliable, all that stuff. just do what i said above, and go nutz.

loving evo's and galant's is like loving fat chicks. you just have to realize that the thrill is still there in the ugly ones and it might give you the ride of your life.
used evo's go for 20k and most still have a 10/100 warranty on drivetrain

You should forget about the Redline bro. I drove the car for the whole day today. Its a pain in the ass to drive. the clutch is either all on or all off, no sweet spot and if you rev it up and ride it out you'll be changing out the damn thing every 25K miles according to the Redline forums. thats like once a year for you guys.
I also had the chance to drive Jin's tunned out Redline tonight. (hes back in Miami) its gets even harder to drive with a few miles on the tranny and clutch. dude, Nami can barely handle a steep climb, a Redline might not be a good one, I mean i have trouble driving it. she needs something with a friendly and light clutch.
how about a Sentra SE-R Spec V? they are hella friendly and got pleanty of pep under the hood.
or a Tiburon. Im not a fan of the car but it is very nicely equiped with leather and premium sound package.
A RSX is actually a good idea but you know how I feel about Honda so.....
Dude seriously we wont be much help to you unless we actually own the car and all these guys are trying to help even if they may go a bit off topic you know they are trying to help ya out.
all i can say for the Redline is its noisy, everything shakes, the handling and steering response is amazing! the brakes are crap! and the clutch is one of the hardest things to get right that Ive ever driven. The engine is solid and the internals are nuke prove. Its a pain to maintain and takes 7 or so quarts of synthetic oil so figure 60-70 bucks per oil change (if you do it yourself) but the mods are cheep and the power potential can rival alot of cars.
thats all I can offer. oh and I have a stick of gum, I can offer you that too.
