I think most people would ask if it is a 3.8 l or a 3.0 l . Most would agree (IMHO), that a 3.0 l is the better of the 2 options. However, I have a 2000 3.8 l and other than the normal items and the P0171 and P0174 fixes, we have been very pleased with our Windstar. We have owned it for 3+ years.

My '98 went 140,000 miles before it demonstrated any problems. It's getting a new transmission this week because the torque converter blew up. It has also had the infamous lights-on problem, and started to show the IMRC failure codes at the same time the transmission went.
When it comes home from the hospital its getting a new windshield (Utah has more rock chip damage than almost any other state); the driver's side power window will get put back on track; the pesky door latches will get a good shot of DeOxIt electronics cleaner to fix the lights on problem; new spark plugs will be put in; and the IMRC actuators will get fixed. Then with regular maintenance it should be good for the next 100,000 miles. (BTW my '91 S-10 Blazer has 240,000 miles on it.)
It has received only casual maintenance, i.e. regular oil and filter changes, alignments, etc. as needed.
My advice is to check on the vehicle's maintenance history before you buy it. Look for a more aggressive maintenance schedule than mine, e.g. transmission oil/filter changes at each 35,000 miles, power steering flluid changes, and spark plug replacement at about 100,000 miles.
