92 Sable wont start...Help!!

3.8L ...15 below zero and it turned over and sputtered a bit but wouldn't start. I assumed it was the temp but I picked up a distributor cap the next day just in case. Before I installed it I tried it again and it sputtered mightily but it did start. I let run for 10 min. or so and tried to take it for a test drive but as soon as I put it in gear and gave it gas it quit. Then it wouldn't even sputter. I installed the new cap but theres no change. While it was idling I noticed a large amount of white exhaust smoke coming from under the engine. This car has 250,000 miles but has been very dependable. Can anyone give me any ideas on what I might be up against ???
