Does the engine/car feel sluggish? if so remove the O2 sensor that is in front of the cat and see if the car perks up.

In addition to Jim's free test, shop can also do a backpressure test. Anything over 1.5psi and the the cat is shot. If your car is an 01-02 model, it may be covered for free under an extended warranty GM is offering (if yo're under 120k miles) due to a known issue with the cat's in those model years.

In the future try to keep the same issue limited to one post or you may get inconsistent answers even from the same participants. It cuts down on confusion and redundant answers and questions, etc.

A simple low cost DIY test is to run an exhaust backpressure test which includes possible clogged CAT convertor using an automtotive vacuum gauge (0-30 hg) connected at the intake manifold. The vacuum reading will be below specs or less than 15 in hg or decreases towards 0. Test is run at idle and 2000 rpms.

If you don't have that stuff, I just un hooked the exhaust. That is what I did and my cat is bad
