2001 Impala Ls

Hi everyone. I've done a search on this, and it seems a lot of people are having this same kind of problem. I would just like some insight as to what should be done.
Tomorrow I'm taking my friends Impala into the shot. 2001 LS with 3.8v6 Her fans run constantly, and the temp guage is always on cold. However the car blows hot air. I'm thinking im going to test out the ECT sensor, and probably replace it.
My questions are, where is it located exactly..... (next to the throttle body on the thermostat housing on my 3100). Anything need to be removed first to gain access? Any gaskets I need to buy for these items (like a throttle body gasket? Any other things could e causing this?

Look under coolant outlet housing left rear engine between exhaust crossover and under intake .
Pointing down at a angle.
No gasket required.

The ECT sensor is located about 3 inches below the thermostat housing. Looking in from the front that is the left front (driver's side) part of the engine and the left hand side of the lower intake manifold.
In most cases when the fans runs constantly the ECT sensor is putting out a low resistance value representing the engine is overheating when it probably is not. Also, an open wire between the ECT output and PCM module input will cause the fans to run. You can measure the ECT resistance with a digital multimeter to see if calibration is good based on temperature. Also, check the electrical connector to the ECT and make sure it is connected properly or re-seat.
BTW - To remove the ECT it helps to remove the aluminum engine mount bracket for the left engine mount dogbone. Also, do not use plumber's tape on the ECT threads.

ok thanks. She also wants me to replace the thermostat. Where is it located on the 3.8 exactly? Is it hard to get to?

Above the ECT. Just follow the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing. See link below which has the location and replacement procedure.
