I'm having all kinds of wiper problems. The drivers side wiper moves independently of the pass. side(or not at all) sometimes it just sits there 'til the pass. side hits it. I checked the wiper arms under the hood and they seem to be attached-how can they move like that and what can I do, if the arms are connected together, then how are they moving separately?

I suspect either the wiper arm or the wiper splined shaft (or both) are very worn. You may get some further service by tightening the (15mm ?) nut that secures the arm to the shaft.

True it may need snuged down.. My rear one came loose a few weeks ago. Just tighten it down and its fine now.

I have the same problem and have had it for a couple of years. In the winter the wipers get hung up with snow or ice and cant move if you turn the wipers on there is alot of pressure on the arm and it trys to turn. I have had mine loosen up at least a half a dozen times. The splines on the the shaft and in the arm are gone. Im thinking of trying some loc tight or a piece of fine mesh or screening material between the arm and shaft. I know to replace the shaft and or the arm has got to be expensive. Mine is also on the drivers side.

Yea I tried too look for the part and all I can find is the motor.
My old 97 Chevy Malibu broke and I had to replace the whole unit it was almost 200.00 bucks. But if they have the arm unit any where it seems that should not cost as much. Rock Auto is showing the motors but not the arm unit... My windstar's rear came loose not too long ago and I was thinking on some thread loc.. to keep it from happening again...They do have the arms on Rock Auto..

I am not sure, but I do not think there are spines that keep it in place.

I believe its the torque on the nut holding the wiper that keeps it on the motor shaft. I would torque it to the required value with a torque wrench. I forget the value.

Gary thanks for the info. Checked Rock Auto and mine are only $8.85 for the LH and 11.79 for RH. Not bad price. Iwill probably get both and use loc tight I just hope I will be able to remove it when I need to. I had a Toyota Supra years ago and the linkage for the winsheild wipers went bad and I used construction adhesive to hold it together it lasted a couple of years until I sold it.
