Hi I have a 2004 Impala LS and i decided to change the air filter myself. So, i got the air filter, and i took the old one out. later on that day a sort of popping noise is comeing from that side. i dont know if the sound is coming from the intake or what. the sound only does it when i hit the gas and going over bumps. Another thing is that i lost a socket in that section of my car and cant find it. i dont know if the socket is making it make that noise. im gonna take it off and put it back on to see if it will help. please give me as much input as possible. thanks

make sure you put it on right. I would bet your socket it hitting some metal or something and making the noise.

I was sort of knocking sound. Its doesn't sound like the engine is knocking just something in the driver side. Also is my car still under warranty with gm. Its only 3 years old and doesn't have a hundred thousand miles.

The noise is probably the socket inside the air filter assembly rollling around and hitting the plastic. That would make a hollow thump/popping type noise.

I took my intake out today and looked around to see if anything was there and it wasnt. i think it my be my transmission but im not sure. it doesnt make the knocking noise when it shifts gears. also i was thinking it was my struts or something. any ideas? also where is a good place to get it checked out at? dealership?

Ask a few friends who they have work on thier cars if they don't have any complaints about that shop give them a try. Your car sould only have the 3yr 36,000 mile warranty if it still has some warranty left take it to the dealer just make sure you have some warranty left before the start working on it.

I just realized the sound is most likely coming from my transmission because when I shift my car from park to reverse it makes the knocking. Also when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. It still shifts smooth. What should I do.

that doesn't mean it's coming from your transmission if you hear it when you take off. when you shift from park to reverse or drive to reverse your engine will move a little because it's going under load being put into gear similar to what will happen if you hit the gas... the engine moves a little in the bay... i'm not ruling it out, but with what you said about the socket, chances are it's jammed someplace next to the engine and when it flexes the engine or socket hits something. going from 2nd to 3rd will make no difference on an automatic cause it doesn't accually shift gears unless your moving... that's basically there so you don't go into overdrive or for engine braking going down hills.
