All;
I am looking for advice and/or guidance on installing/replacing the ABS Pump ECU assembly in my 2000 Windstar SEL. I'm pretty handy and typically do all my own maintenance, with the help of your typical parts store manual, of course!
In this case, though, said manuals offer pretty much no guidance whatsoever on the replacement of this part. So, needless to say, any guidance or nice-to-know information would be both helpful and much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi
I can take a look in my OEM manual for '96. In the meantime, what is prompting the replacement?

I'm curious, too. There are familiar Windstar challenges regularly seen on this board, but the ABS pump itself is rarely mentioned as a problem area.

The title says pump assembly (which is the HCU), but the text says ECU (the control module).
ECU is straightforward, but a PITA since it is under the van (and rustly bolts if you live in Canada like I do!).
If you want to do the ECU, send me your e-mail address and I will send you a PDF of the instructions (for a 99, but should be the same for a 2000).

All;
First of all, thanks for responding! It's good to see there are some folks out there who've experienced similar problems--well, I guess it's good for me anyway!
So why do I need to replace my ABS ECU/Pump assembly?
My ABS light started coming on intermittently some time ago and is now on full time. The ABS system is also no longer working, i.e. I can lock ..em up with the best up them! I've checked all the requisite fuses etc. and all appear to be good. I also finally broke down and had the dealer diagnose the issue and they confirmed that the ABS ECU is bad. The said they would replace it for a cool $800 + the $130 I already paid for the read--Arrrg!!! Anyway, considering the age of the vehichle and the ridiculous cost, I ordered a used part for about 1/5 the cost and plan to put it in myself. If all I need to install is the ECU and it's much easier, that's what I'd like to do, as the used part (pump & ECU) could have more miles on it than my van does. Just in case, though, it wouldn't hurt to know how to do the complete changeout.
Frostie, I will send you my email address.
Oh, and did I mention that my speedo started working at 1/2 speed on or about the same time my ABS system when screwy. Not sure if they are related, especially considering all the other crazy things I've had to fix on this vehicle.
Thanks again,
Matt

My ABS and Speedo problems are both fixed...no thanks to my local Ford Dealer, who for about $150 worth of wrong diagnosis expense and who knows how much $$$ if I had had them "fix" it--they said it was a bad ABS Pump/ECU Assembly or $600 for the part + $200 for install.
Things turned out much better & cheaper having worked with the members of this forum and taking the job on myself, with special thanks to Frostie for sending the PDF for R&R of the ABS Pump/ECU assembly, which I ended up doing twice (ECU only) as my ECU was never actually bad--installed replacement I had ordered, still bad, reinstalled original after ohming out all my sensors and finding the right front wide open (electrically).
Yup, the problem turned out to be a bad (electrically open) right-front wheel speed sensor ($41 at the dealer). It wasn't too bad to replace and I'm now pretty good and swapping out ABS ECUs. The biggest learning here, however, was the fact that if your speedo is not working correctly (at least on models with an electrically driven speedo) and your ABS is acting up as well, the likely culprit is probably a front wheel speed sensor. As was with my case, my speedo was running at exactly 1/2 speed, which meant it was missing 1/2 of its signal input, or one of the two front speed sensors. I'm not sure but I don't think the rear sensors have anything to do with the speedo input.
So again, thanks to all for your help and I hope that perhaps some of my long winded posting may help someone else who's experiencing the same or similar issues.

Thanks so much for the info. I need to service an intermittent ABS light on my 2000 Windstar with 100k miles. I suspect the sensors and will start with that. Can you tell me what resistance you measured for each sensor? Any advice you can give me in tracking down the problem is most welcome. I paid $90 to the Ford dealer just to find out there are two error codes, one hydraulic and the other mechanical. Not much to go on so any help is most welcome. Thanks.
