96 Windstar 3.8 LX
As one thing gets fixed another goes bad. I am waiting for a catalytic converter from Rock Auto and the Trac off light starts blinking. I did some checking and found a tsb of sorts for Windstar 94 / 97 (I wasnt aware there was a 94) It said something about a mis communication with the PCM.
Bulletin CQB 00-01 Trac off iluminated with trouble code U1009 and or U1027. It says to reprogram the PCM if this exists. However I am not getting a cel. Is anyone or has anyone had this problem? It resets itself after the ignition turns off and about 5 minutes of driving brings it back on. Is a Actron 9135 Code reader capable of reading U series codes. In my book it only goes as high as U0327. A link to the tsb
http://www.carquest.com/common/downloads/partsTechBrakeCQB%2000-01.pdf I would appreciate any information anyone has. Thanks

It may lead to a broken abs wheel sensor tone ring on front axel.
Have a quick look at them they will crack or slip over.
If not that.
First you need to get it on a good engine /transmission/body/Gem/ABS brake capable scanner and check for codes.
You will probably need to find a good repair shop to do the scan I do not think AZ or many parts places have the good full scanners to do the job.
Post back codes and we can go from there.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I just took it for a 20 minute drive. The light did not flash. It was raining and the trac light the green one came on when I accelerated and the wheels started to slip, as it should. About 5 minutes later the trac off light started to flash. I tried to make the traction control activate but the light still flashed. Im almost sure it is as the bulletin from Carquest shows the PCM lost communication. Im very tempted to buy one of the obd scanners that hook to a laptop i.e. AutoTap. However IM not sure what codes they will read also. I looked for trouble shooting or information from the Ford Service Manual Discs available on line but no help. Thanks for everyones help.

You can not send a boy to do A MANS JOB.:grinyes: :grinno:
You will need a ABS brake and a body/gem capable scanner.
You need to get the codes before you can start trouble shooting.
But first have a look at the abs tone rings.:grinyes: :grinno:
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I checked both rings on the half shafts. Both shafts were replaced within the last year. When the ring went bad the last time it gave a ABS and trac off flashing light. I think the ABS light would need to be flashing or on to give a code. IM not sure. Also does anyone know if the laptop type readers such as AutoTap will read any U type codes. I will probably have them read unless one of those readers will work and then I will purchase the reader. Thanks
